Introduction to the Team
Expedia Technology teams partner with our Product teams to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.
This Senior Software Development Engineer position sits on the Data Processing team within the Data Platform organization. We build and run Expedia Group’s central data processing platform, helping teams across the company turn large volumes of data into fast, reliable analytics and machine learning that power better traveler experiences. In this role, you will lead the design and evolution of core data processing and AI capabilities, driving reliability, performance, and usability improvements that help teams build and run the pipelines behind critical business decisions.
In this role, you will:
Design, build, and evolve highly reliable, scalable, and performant data processing services and batch/streaming pipelines that power analytics, machine learning, and core product experiences across multiple domains.
Define and implement robust system design (including low-level design), API contracts, and data models that ensure high-quality, well-structured, and reusable data for downstream consumers and platforms.
Lead end-to-end delivery of complex data engineering initiatives, from requirement clarification and technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and operational support in production environments.
Improve reliability, observability, and cost-efficiency of data processing systems by driving instrumentation, automated testing, performance tuning, and incident reduction across services and workflows.
Collaborate with engineering, product, data science, and analytics teams to translate business and analytical requirements into scalable technical solutions and reusable data assets that work across multiple product and data domains.
Safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled solutions that improve outcomes, including familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience.
8+ years of relevant professional experience.
Professional software development experience focused on backend or data-intensive systems, including ownership of services or pipelines running in production.
Proven experience designing and implementing data processing solutions (batch and/or streaming) with strong skills in system design (LLD), API design, and data modeling.
Proficiency in at least one modern programming language commonly used for data processing or backend services, along with experience working with relational and/or NoSQL data stores and responsibility for reliability, performance, and operability of services or pipelines.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience architecting and scaling multi-service or domain-level data processing platforms, including standardizing data contracts, schemas, and APIs across teams.
Hands-on experience with large-scale distributed data processing, including optimization of high-volume pipelines, storage layouts, and query performance in production.
Track record of driving operational excellence for data systems, such as automated testing, CI/CD for data services, data quality frameworks, observability, and well-documented runbooks.
Familiarity with AI-driven systems and ML-powered use cases for data products, including safely integrating AI/ML‑enabled solutions that improve outcomes in data processing workflows, and experience applying AI-assisted tools to accelerate development and operations.
Experience leading technical direction for complex data engineering projects, mentoring other engineers, and influencing cross-team decisions on data architecture, standards, and best practices.
Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
