As a Software Development Engineer I (Backend) in our Platforms team, you’ll help build the core services and capabilities that power products across Expedia Group. You’ll work on distributed backend systems where performance, reliability, and scalability really matter, using modern technologies to deliver secure, resilient, and high‑quality experiences for travelers and partners worldwide.
What You’ll do:
- Expedia Group is looking for top engineering talent to help drive the development of our backend platforms. Our services sit at the heart of a globally distributed system that spans many organizations and power the core capabilities of our travel experiences. Our roadmap is deep and includes innovative work to make our services fault‑tolerant, observable, and delightful for both our customers (travelers) and partners (hotels, airlines, etc.).
- As part of our development team, you’ll actively participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements capture, design, development, testing, deployment, and support.
- Design, develop, document, and thoroughly test backend services and APIs, primarily using technologies such as Java, SprintBoot, Dropwizard, NoSQL and cloud services
- Contribute to event‑driven systems, including event publishing and consuming, to build scalable and decoupled services.
- Safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled solutions that improve outcomes, applying AI/ML concepts and AI‑driven tools or workflows to real‑world products in a responsible way.
- Own software components depending on the projects in flight, and build simple automation, diagnostics, and reporting tools around the components you own.
- Troubleshoot, debug, and help resolve technical issues across the stack, working with peers to drive problems to closure.
- Expand your skills in developing high‑quality, distributed, and scalable backend software, including writing JUnit and functional tests and contributing to monitoring and observability.
- Provide quality implementation and testing of components or features with peer and manager support, and supply pragmatic improvements to existing solutions.
Who You are:
We know that many potential candidates can be hesitant to apply for a job if they aren't sure that they meet all the criteria shared. If you meet all the criteria labelled “Must” and are interested in this role, we encourage you to apply!

- Must be willing to relocate to the city of the job location if outside commuting distance.
- Must have moderate proficiency in at least one backend programming language, such as Java (preferred), with exposure to building services or APIs.
- Helpful to have familiarity with backend frameworks such as Springboot with SQL or NoSQL data modeling
- Helpful to have working knowledge of AWS or another cloud platform, including deploying and operating services in a cloud environment.
- Helpful to have experience with eventing/event consumption (e.g., working with queues, streams, or messaging systems).
- Helpful to have experience writing JUnit tests, functional tests, and instrumenting code for monitoring and observability.
- Helpful to have a solid understanding of object‑oriented programming concepts, data structures, algorithms, and system‑level programming.
- Helpful to have familiarity with AI/ML concepts or AI‑driven tools/workflows and an interest in applying them safely to products.
- Helpful to have effective communication skills and the ability to engage with a variety of partners (internal, external, technical, and non‑technical).
- Helpful to be a quick learner and a great problem solver who is passionate about solving complex problems in a simple, effective, and efficient manner.
