Business Overview / Position Objective

Citigroup Global Markets Japan (CGMJ) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join its Markets Middle Office Management team as a manager for our Rates Trading Middle Office team. This pivotal Vice President role is at the heart of ensuring the integrity and smooth operation of our Rates business, serving as a critical control and support function for the Tokyo-based Rates trading desks.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting a comprehensive range of products, including Interest Rate Swaps, Swaptions, JGBs, and Structured Products. This position requires an individual who is not only an expert in Rates Middle Office operations but also demonstrates exceptional detail orientation, strong communication skills, and proven leadership potential.

You will be instrumental in developing and leading a high-performing team, fostering collaboration, and driving initiatives to enhance our operational support framework. This includes significant interaction with internal stakeholders (Front Office, Operations & Technology, Compliance) and external clients, as well as participation in strategic projects focused on regulatory implementation, automation, and new business initiatives designed to continuously optimize our control environment and operational excellence.

Position Responsibilities

Key functions and responsibilities included within this role are:

  • Management & Oversight:
    • Manage and oversee Control and Regulation support functions for the Rates Business.
    • Ensure the delivery of quality control across daily, weekly, and monthly operations supporting front office sales.
    • Ensure compliance with all internal and external control requirements.
  • Issue Resolution & Escalation:
    • Act as a primary point of escalation for Japan Rates trading issues and queries.
    • Escalate critical matters to senior management in a timely manner.
    • Drive final resolution of issues and implement associated remediation plans.
  • Team Leadership & Development:
    • Develop and supervise Rates Middle Office team members, providing clear direction and support for their professional growth.
    • Champion diversity and inclusion as a priority within the team.
    • Provide daily management support for the local team in Japan (e.g., One-to-Ones, Goal Setting, Mid & Year End Reviews, Cross Training implementation).
  • Reporting & Analysis:
    • Provide comprehensive analysis and reporting to Business and Middle Office management via KPI/KRI/MBR processes.
  • Project Management & Process Enhancement:
    • Participate in special projects including, but not limited to, performance analysis, implementation, and support for new business or regulatory initiatives.
    • Provide detailed specifications and conduct testing for new technologies.
    • Maintain, develop, and continuously improve current processes and procedures.
    • Proactively seek ways to enhance existing processes and develop robust control procedures for new requirements.
    • Collaborate with regional/global peers to develop controlled, simplified, and scalable processes with minimal touchpoints.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Product Knowledge:
    • Strong knowledge of Rates Derivative products, with a comprehensive understanding of Fixed Income and Derivative products.
    • Expertise in at least one asset class (e.g., Interest Rate Swaps, Swaptions, JGBs) is essential.
  • Communication:
    • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to liaise effectively across large global multi-functional departments.
    • Advanced to fluent verbal and written English and Japanese (both written and spoken) is required.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 7 years of demonstrated experience in a Middle Office or Operations role, specifically within a Finance Middle Office or Operations function.
    • Proven experience in leading and developing a team.
  • Organization:
    • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
    • Demonstrated flexibility to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities effectively under tight deadlines..
  • Interpersonal:
    • Excellent interpersonal skills to build strong relationships both internally and externally.
    • Ability to lead, influence, and collaborate effectively with diverse teams and individuals across different backgrounds and nationalities.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required.

Preferred Licenses

  • JSDA Registered Representative (Internal Control Manager or Class I preferred).

Preferred Level of Qualification

  • Education: Undergraduate degree level.
  • Work Experience: Middle Office experience is strongly preferred.
