Job Description

The U.S. healthcare system is complex. For AbbVie to lead the industry in this environment, it is vital that our US Market Access (USMAx) Pipeline Team thoroughly comprehend the current and future state of the evolving U.S. healthcare space and market access channels.

The Director, USMAx Pipeline is an individual contributor who will lead U.S. market access strategy development for early pipeline priority assets within the assigned AbbVie franchise. This Director will be directly responsible for integrating an understanding of the complex U.S. health system and the needs and requirements of U.S. payers into early asset development and bring the voice of U.S. payers to our early drug development process. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of U.S. private and public payer segments, pharmacy and medical benefit reimbursement, buy and bill models, and the IRA. The candidate must be able to think strategically and critically, build strong and trusting relationships for cross-functional influence, and demonstrate strong executive presence in order to represent U.S. Market Access effectively in pipeline governance and business development discussions.

The Director will work closely with cross-functional colleagues in Pipeline Commercialization Strategy (PCS) and Commercial Leadership to determine USMAx project and deliverable prioritization and will lead the delivery of these projects. This role will ensure integration within the AbbVie Pipeline Commercialization Model, including co-leadership of the Value and Access Teams (VATs) with International Market Access (IMAP) colleagues, and will lead the creation of US EIVPs (Early Integrated Value Propositions) and Integrated Access Strategies (IAS). The Director will also participate in Asset Strategy Team discussions and provide leadership within other Pipeline Commercialization Model teams as needed (IEST). The ideal candidate will bring a proven track record of supporting a positive team culture, leading by example, strong cross-functional stakeholder alignment, and an understanding of the AbbVie Pipeline Commercialization Model.

Specific Accountabilities Include:

  • Responsible and accountable for the access point of view and creation of Integrated Asset Strategies, Early Integrated Value Propositions and Disease Area Strategies within the AbbVie Portfolio.
  • Collaborate with teams across BUs, PCS, IMAP, Medical, HEOR, CBSO, IRA, R&D, and others to ensure the value drivers of USMAx decision makers are incorporated into pipeline commercialization strategies.
  • Inform clinical development programs so that endpoints and evidence generation plans (i.e., clinical, economic, and humanistic outcomes) support optimized patient access for new and novel therapies
  • Ensure project resource needs are met; secure and allocate budgets across asset assignments to meet critical enterprise goals for pipeline assets.
  • Ensure that deep USMAx insights are embedded in all early pipeline strategies to support optimal asset development through the 1-7-5 model.
  • Initiate market shaping in a timely fashion, ensuring a smooth hand-off to Directors, USMAx Marketing, for U.S. launch readiness preparation.
  • Provide strong asset leadership, serving as the primary point of contact for USMAx Pipeline stakeholders aligned to that asset and disease area.
  • Act as a critical partner to key internal stakeholders who drive early pipeline strategy, including U.S. Commercial Leadership, Asset Strategy Leadership, Pipeline Commercial Strategy Leadership, Medical Affairs/HEOR, and International Market Access and Pricing.
  • Represent USMAx Early Pipeline as a subject matter expert at governance reviews as needed (e.g., TASC, LMG, DRC, etc.).
  • Contribute critical strategic thinking to inform access and pricing assumptions to create accurate, market-driven LRP assumptions for pipeline assets and business development (as assigned).
  • Serve as pipeline lead, accountable for USMAx financial LRP and strategic LRP assumptions for all assigned assets.
  • Work closely across USMAx teams and stay up to date on channel dynamics and priorities.
  • Partner with IRA and cross-strategy teams to ensure optimal asset planning and inform strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Demonstrate enterprise mindset and leadership, act as a role model and example across the team
