The Associate Director, Business Intelligence (BI) is a strategic and critical role in the APEX Enterprise organization, responsible for leading the delivery of scalable, trusted, and actionable BI solutions that accelerate decision-making across AbbVie’s US Therapeutics organization. A core expectation of this role is a strong data product management mindset—operating as a BI product manager to define the vision, roadmap, and adoption strategy for governed BI assets that deliver measurable business value.
This role operates in a highly collaborative, matrixed environment and partners with cross-functional stakeholders (Business, APEX Enterprise, and Business Technology) to align on priorities, navigate ambiguity, and deliver high-impact insights while balancing enterprise standards with rapid, agile execution.
The core role involves building and scaling best-in-class BI capabilities—including reusable data models and metrics, governed self-service reporting, and integrating them with a modern “data marketplace” approach that makes curated data products easy to discover, understand, access, and use quickly and safely.
This position is a leadership role and involves establishing BI best practices (standards, governance, and ways of working) while enabling teams to deliver iteratively. The Associate Director will drive automation and repeatability in reporting and analytics, improve adoption through enablement, and ensure solutions are performant, secure, and fit-for-purpose.
- Own the BI product vision and roadmap in partnership with business and technology stakeholders, defining outcomes, success metrics, and a release plan that drives adoption.
- Manage the BI product backlog end-to-end (intake, prioritization, user stories, and lifecycle management), balancing speed-to-value with governance, quality, and reusability.
- Lead delivery of BI products (dashboards, scorecards, and analytical views) that translate business questions into clear, measurable, decision-ready insights.
- Partner with stakeholders to define and align enterprise and domain KPI/metric definitions, ensuring consistency while meeting evolving business needs.
- Collaborate with APEX Enterprise and BTS to implement and scale a data marketplace approach (curated data products, metadata, lineage, and access patterns) to accelerate trusted data consumption.
- Establish and continuously improve BI best practices, including semantic modeling, reusable metric layers, documentation, QA, performance optimization, and release/change management.
- Enable governed self-service analytics by defining standards and guardrails (security, privacy, and compliance), improving data literacy, and driving adoption of approved BI assets.
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Finance, Economics, or related field required
- 10+ years in work experience in business consulting, analytics, BI, or data product roles, with 4+ years leading BI delivery in a matrixed enterprise environment preferred.
- Strong business and analytics acumen – working knowledge of BI delivery practices (requirements to insights), semantic modeling/metric definition, and measurement frameworks preferred.
- Requires the ability to work in a matrixed environment, deal effectively with ambiguity, and align to AbbVie’s ways of working while enabling agile delivery.
- Working knowledge of Power BI and Fabric visualization tools to explore/analyze data and communicate a clear story through insights.
- Strong knowledge of SQL to analyze and extract data from data sources.
- Working knowledge of analytic approaches, data automation, and AI deployment concepts (e.g., copilots/assistants, NLQ, or automated insight generation) in support of BI consumption.
- Experience working with large-scale enterprise datasets (e.g., commercial, operational, finance, customer, or healthcare data) and delivering curated, well-documented data products for broad consumption.
- Working knowledge of python, R, or other languages with a focus on analytics and automation preferred.
- Knowledge of data governance and evolving privacy/security requirements and ability to translate this understanding into actionable BI strategies using advanced analytics methods.
- Robust understanding of BI ecosystem concepts, including semantic layers, metric stores, data catalogs/metadata, role-based access, and patterns that enable governed self-service at scale.
- Demonstrated ability to balance enterprise standards with speed-to-value, applying a product mindset to prioritize, iterate, and operationalize BI solutions in a complex environment.
- Ability to develop insights and communicate effectively to influence executive level decisions.
