Institutional Credit Management (ICM) – Credit Risk Associate (Commodities Portfolio)

Citi continues to strengthen its business control and governance framework by building out Institutional Credit Management (ICM), a first line of defense function responsible for managing credit risk activities for Citi’s institutional clients. ICM’s objective is to deliver integrated end-to-end credit underwriting, identification, measurement, management, and monitoring for wholesale credit across the enterprise.

Within ICM, the Credit Underwriting function (ICM UW) provides credit analysis, underwriting, and first line of defense credit approval for periodic and material transaction reviews, as well as ongoing credit monitoring across all institutional businesses, including Corporate Banking, Services, and Markets.

The Credit Risk Associate role is responsible for a portfolio of institutional relationships within the Commodities sector, which includes Power, Natural Gas, and Precious Metals, with credit exposure primarily in the form of derivative facilities. Responsibilities include providing initial and ongoing credit risk analysis of new and existing clients through a robust underwriting analysis process within Citi’s Wholesale Credit Risk Framework, Policies, Procedures and Guidelines; conducting continuous monitoring of client credit quality and exposure; supporting front office origination and marketed transactions with appropriate risk mitigation; presenting timely and well-reasoned greenlight proposals to the 2nd Line of Defense; and preparing and aggregating client data for periodic portfolio reviews. This position reports directly to the Commodities Underwriter Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform fundamental credit analysis of counterparties in the Commodities sector using quantitative and qualitative factors, including market dynamics and regulatory considerations.
  • Prepare Credit Approval Memos (CAMs) and assign risk ratings based on independent assessment and due diligence, internal modeling and scorecards, and client engagement, ensuring alignment within Citi’s risk appetite.
  • Monitor the covered portfolio continuously, including tracking commodity price volatility, supply/demand fundamentals, and geopolitical risks; promptly escalate potential credit concerns.
  • Review and recommend risk ratings across the Commodities Counterparty portfolio.
  • Support senior Underwriters on all activities related to the assigned coverage including new transaction approvals, review of trade structures and exposures, writing of credit memos and credit administration.

Skills & Competencies

Risk & Credit Underwriting

  • Strong analytical skills with ability to assess liquidity, leverage, and cash flow under volatile commodity price environments.
  • Ability to form independent credit opinions and identify risks in derivative transactions and physical trading of commodities.
  • Advanced understanding of financial statements, GAAP accounting, and financial spreading including calculation and analysis of key credit ratios.
  • Expertise in industry research, including commodity market drivers, regulatory frameworks, and counterparty risk factors.
  • Solid experience understanding Credit Policy and ability to benchmark transactions against internal standards.
  • Proactive identification and escalation of potential risk issues.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field.
  • 5–8 years of credit experience in Banking or Credit Risk Management, preferably with exposure to Commodities markets and derivative products.
