Skills and Competencies

  • Strong mathematical and statistical foundations
  • Strong ability in programming languages used in model development (e.g., R, Python, Julia)
  • Experience with complex statistical techniques
  • Strong proficiency in R programming
  • Good skills in a Linux/Unix environment
  • Experience using version control systems such as GitHub is preferred
  • Knowledge of and interest in tropical cyclones is preferred
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills, with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate analysis results and insights effectively
  • Driven and committed, demonstrating self motivation as well as strong teamwork skills
  • Basic understanding of artificial intelligence concepts, with curiosity and enthusiasm for learning how AI tools can be used to improve processes and drive efficiency
  • Interest in exploring AI systems and a willingness to develop awareness of responsible AI practices, including risk management and ethical use

Education

  • Currently studying towards an MSc or PhD in Statistics, Climate Science, Athomespheric Sciences, Meteorology, Applied Mathematics, or related fields (including students transitioning between MSc and PhD programs)
  • Available for a 4-month internship

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and development to understand the effects of extreme climate phenomena, with a particular focus on tropical cyclones
  • Support the design, prototyping, and advancement of mathematical models of climate extremes and their impacts
  • Work closely with experienced catastrophe modelers to develop and enhance modeling approaches
  • Analyze climate and catastrophe data to generate insights and improve model performance
  • Contribute to the documentation and communication of research findings and model outcomes

About the team
Moody’s RMS Climate Hazards team, based in London, sits within the company’s Model Development group as part of the Models and Data Business Unit. The team works closely with hazard, vulnerability, exposure, and financial modelers to quantify the loss potential of extreme climate events and to ensure the accuracy, efficiency, and appropriateness of the final modelling products. It operates as a multidisciplinary group of catastrophe modelers, including statisticians, mathematicians, physical scientists, and engineers, who develop models that are critical to Moody’s RMS reinsurance and insurance clients, as well as essential to the broader markets served by Moody’s RMS.
