Job Description

We are seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer with instrumentation or systems development experience to join the Madison Peptide Therapeutics (MPT) Engineering team.  This individual will work with engineers and scientists to maintain and enhance our fleet of Peptide Array Synthesizers in a biotech research environment.

The Engineering Scientist II combines a strong understanding of scientific, medical, or laboratory instrumentation and their mechanical engineering expertise to support and enhance internally developed laboratory equipment.  They often design, modify, or integrate hardware components, including sensors, actuators, pumps, motors, cameras, manifolds, and other devices to perform coordinated, reliable activities.  They work collaboratively in a team environment to design and develop high quality systems and workflows that increase throughput, reduce cost, and improve the quality of the product.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, troubleshoot, and maintain scientific instrumentation and processes that improve the capabilities of internally developed Peptide Array Synthesizers.
  • Support Operations Scientists to help solve production issues and problems when they arise.
  • Conduct measurements, testing, and validation to ensure quality, reliability, and performance of hardware and subsystems.
  • Generate and maintain CAD models and drawings, including version control, dimensioning standards, and design reviews.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including scientists, electrical and mechanical engineers, operations managers, and other staff, to gather requirements and deliver novel solutions that meet business needs. 
  • Conceive and conduct experiments, or engineering studies/models to characterize aspects of various systems and use the data to inform design decisions.
  • Design, specify, and work with vendors to order custom and catalog components.
  • Keep engineering leadership, peers, and team informed through effective verbal and written communication.
  • Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies, including code of conduct, safety, data security, and GxP compliance.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 7+ years’ experience, or Master’s Degree with 5+ years’ experience.
  • 2+ years’ experience developing instrumentation for laboratory, scientific, or medical end use.
  • Experience using SolidWorks to generate, modify, and maintain solid models, detailed drawings, and assemblies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
  • Proficiency in Python or MATLAB programming languages.
  • Understanding of the processes used in the fabrication of precision instrument hardware.
  • Thorough understanding of applied math, physics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience using Tecan, Hamiliton, or similar commercial liquid handling robots.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling in COMSOL or similar analysis software.
  • Experience using LabVIEW and National Instruments data acquisition tools.
  • Experience designing, assembling, and evaluating optical subsystems.
