As a Front End Software Engineer working on Expedia’s critical production checkout applications, your mission is to ensure Expedia Checkout is fast, highly available, scalable, and engineered to withstand unparalleled demand. You’ll be in the thick of solving the real‑world problems of systems at scale. You bring strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, proficiency in coding and systems design, solid interpersonal skills, and a desire to tackle complex problems. You thrive in a dynamic, agile environment, adapt quickly to new technologies, and enjoy working on products used by millions of travelers to plan, book, and experience trips they will remember forever.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, build, and maintain high‑quality, performant user interfaces using modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React or similar).
  • Translate product requirements and UX designs into clean, accessible, and reusable UI components.
  • Own features and services end‑to‑end: technical design, implementation, testing, rollout, and post‑launch operation.
  • Collaborate closely with product, design, and backend teams to define APIs, data contracts, and interaction patterns for checkout experiences.
  • Improve our frontend architecture, build pipelines, and tooling to increase developer productivity, reliability, and code quality.
  • Champion best practices in performance, accessibility, security, and usability for high‑traffic, mission‑critical flows.
  • Write and maintain automated tests (unit, integration, and end‑to‑end) and participate in code reviews to uphold high engineering standards.
  • Lead complex, well‑defined engineering projects while acting as a high‑performing individual contributor and mentor to more junior engineers.
  • Design and evolve complex, highly available frontend systems so that they are observable, testable, and supportable within established SLAs.
  • Select and integrate appropriate technologies, frameworks, and APIs to solve business needs, including those consumed across teams and business units.
  • Apply strong software design principles, computer science fundamentals, and design patterns to write clean, modular, and maintainable code.
  • Monitor, debug, and troubleshoot applications in production, driving root‑cause analysis and implementing durable fixes and improvements.
  • Think holistically across applications, services, platforms, people, and processes, and clearly communicate major technical or operational initiatives (e.g., RCAs) to a broad audience.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or
    3+ years with a Master’s degree.
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, and CSS3 (including responsive design).
  • Hands‑on experience with at least one major frontend framework (React preferred; Vue/Angular/Svelte also relevant).
  • Solid understanding of frontend architecture, state management, and component‑driven development.
  • Experience with modern testing frameworks and tools (e.g., Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress, Playwright).
  • Strong debugging skills and comfort using browser dev tools and performance profiling for complex issues.
  • Experience designing or consuming APIs used across multiple teams or business units.
  • Experience making technology and design trade‑offs to solve business problems (e.g., framework, API, or integration choices).
  • Understanding of how projects and teams align to business outcomes and interact with adjacent systems and teams.
  • Experience operating production systems within defined SLAs, including monitoring, alerting, and incident participation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to elevate others through mentoring, knowledge sharing, and leading thoughtful design and code reviews.
  • Strong understanding of how applications, data stores, frameworks, and platforms fit together in end‑to‑end web architectures.
  • Ability to identify inefficiencies in code, systems, and organizational processes and drive improvements across team boundaries.
  • Experience bringing together stakeholders with varied perspectives to define problems, explore trade‑offs, and converge on solutions.
  • Comfort working across multiple technology stacks and learning new technologies as needed to unblock teams or projects.

The total cash range for this position in Seattle is $146,000.00 to $204,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $233,500.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
