Job Overview
The Vice President of Software Engineering & Technology Transformation is a senior engineering leader responsible for driving critical elements of Relativity’s technology transformation while ensuring high quality, predictable delivery across key platform and product domains.Reporting directly to the CTO, this role sits at the intersection of strategy and execution. You will work closely with senior engineering and product leaders and Principal Engineers, translating architectural direction into reality, engaging directly in design reviews, developing and enforcing engineering standards at scale. This role will reshape how Relativity’s engineering organization operates in a cloud native, AI accelerated world.
This is not a “run the org chart” role. It is a change leadership and leverage role—focused on advancing outcomes, engineering maturity, and technical clarity.
Job Description and Requirements
What You’ll Own
Transformation Leadership
- Lead major components of Relativity’s cloud native and architectural transformation, ensuring progress is measurable, sustained, and aligned to the CTO’s technology strategy.
- Drive modernization of core systems supporting large scale SaaS workloads.
- Act as a senior execution partner to the CTO, absorbing operational and organizational load so the organization can move faster.
Engineering Oversight
- Provide direct leadership, alignment, and accountability for Principal and Staff Engineers across product domain areas. Oversee multiple engineering teams responsible for critical platform and product capabilities.
- Establish clear expectations for technical decision making, design quality, and cross-team influence at senior engineering levels.
- Ensure principal level technical work is focused on the highest leverage problems: architecture, reliability, security, scale, and developer productivity.
- Balance near term delivery with long term technical health—actively managing technical debt as a business risk - while also maintaining best in class customer experience.
Operating Model & Standards
- Drive consistent engineering standards across architecture, DevOps, observability, security, and SDLC practices.
- Partner with SRE, Security, and Platform leaders to embed “built-in” reliability and security rather than bolted-on controls.‑
- Improve engineering operating rigor: planning, dependency management, decision clarity, and accountability.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Work closely with Product, Security, Infrastructure, and Customer teams to ensure technology decisions support customer trust, scale, and innovation.
- Represent engineering initiatives clearly and credibly to executive leadership, customers, and internal stakeholders.
- Partner with Engineering VP peers to define what the future of Relativity Engineering will look like - both the cloud-native architecture and the engineering culture.
What Success Looks Like
- Transformation initiatives move from ideation into owned and successfully operated multi-tenant systems.
- Principal Engineers are aligned, impactful, and focused on the hardest problems.
- Engineering teams operate with clearer objective standards, fewer surprises, and higher delivery confidence.
- The CTO’s organization scales without increasing leadership bottlenecks.
Qualifications
Required
- 12+ years of progressive engineering leadership experience, including senior leadership roles (Director, Senior Director, or VP) in SaaS or large‑scale software organizations.
- Proven experience leading teams through technology or architectural transformation in complex environments.
- Deep understanding of modern cloud architectures (Azure preferred), distributed systems, and SaaS operating models.
- Strong track record working with Staff and Principal Engineers to drive architectural outcomes at scale.
- Ability to operate effectively in ambiguity with a bias toward action and clarity.
Preferred
- Experience modernizing legacy platforms toward cloud native and service-oriented architectures.
- Familiarity with AI enabled systems, data intensive platforms, or ML/GenAI integration in production environments.
- Experience leading globally distributed engineering organizations.
Location & Travel
This role is remote, with a preference for Chicago. Travel—including international travel, is required to support global teams and transformation objectives.
