From the time I was in high school, my dad would tell me he would ask anyone to help get me an internship or job - his clients, people on the street, clerks at the grocery store. I used to resist the help, determined to be independent and to avoid this guilty feeling I had about networking being transactional. But I knew that networking was an important part of building my career.
