DESCRIPTION
Job Summary:
The On-board Diagnostics Technical Specialist position is a key role within the Technical Certification and Compliance (TC&C) OBD team, part of the Product Compliance and Regulatory Affairs (PCRA) organization. In this role, you will develop expertise in Cummins’ Diagnostic Development Processes, specifically related to global OBD regulations. Your primary focus will be on the development of diagnostic systems for air handling, engine controls, and fuel systems across various architectures for future internal combustion engines and hybrid/electric powertrains, ensuring compliance with evolving legislative and customer-driven requirements. You will provide essential support and guidance to functional system and component teams, facilitating the delivery of verified and calibrated software for diagnostic features. Your responsibilities will include making critical decisions regarding diagnostic system design, requirements, calibration, and testing, all of which directly impact the quality and performance of calibrated subsystems. You will also review the work of developers and testers to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient designs. Additionally, you will investigate design or calibration-related issues, understand their causal mechanisms, recommend solutions, and document your findings. Your role will involve applying and enhancing calibration tuning and validation processes and tools, including system specification, modeling and simulation, and troubleshooting, utilizing tools such as Simulink and PTC Integrity to drive continuous improvement in our diagnostic capabilities.
In this role you will make an impact in the following ways:
Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with diverse stakeholders to gather input and negotiate project requirements, ensuring alignment and clarity in project goals.
Decision Making: Make informed decisions regarding short-term project details, including analysis, testing, and stakeholder communication, impacting project progression at a higher level than typical senior or lead engineers.
Process Improvement: Apply and enhance processes such as Pre Program Planning (PPP), Product Preceding Technology (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), Value Package Change (VPC), Engineering Standard Work (ESW), and Functional Excellence Practice (FEP).
Technical Expertise: Utilize tools related to thermal and fluid sciences, including GT-Suite, Boost, Fluent, Converge, Concerto, CyberApps, Cummins Data Analysis Tool (CDAT), Mach, DARTS, Calterm, and ECM calibration tools to support high-quality decision-making.
Project Leadership: Provide independent leadership for smaller business impact projects or complex components, products, systems, or services, demonstrating accountability and managing ambiguity effectively.
Work Process Development: Lead the development and improvement of work processes and systems within a functional discipline area, ensuring best practices are followed.
Team Coordination: Coordinate and direct work among technicians and temporary student employees, facilitating knowledge transfer to less experienced engineers through mentorship and guidance.
Technical Direction: Support and influence the technical direction within project teams, continuously developing proficiency in critical competency areas.
Specialization: Operate as a recognized specialist in a specific discipline or product area, contributing to the team’s overall expertise.
