About Kairos Aerospace

At Kairos Aerospace, we combine innovative aerospace systems with advanced data science. Unlike traditional aerospace companies, we sell information, not hardware - we operate our sensors cost-effectively at continental scale to produce novel data streams about pressing global problems.

First on our list: spotting hard-to-monitor emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that accelerates climate change. Since starting continuous survey operations in 2018, Kairos has removed methane emissions equal to over 9.2 million tonnes of CO2e through our work. To put that in perspective, that’s equivalent to over 2 million cars being removed from the roads for a year or shutting down about seventeen 350 MW coal-fired power plants.

We call that a good start.

As a team, we love science and engineering, we love getting our hands dirty with hardware and software, and we love seeing our work make a difference in the real world.

We’ve created a diverse, collaborative, supportive, and fun environment based on integrity and treating people right. So no matter your gender, gender identity, race, age, beliefs, sexual orientation, or disabilities, we welcome you and would like to work with you. :-)

It’s never boring, it’s always challenging, and we’re usually laughing.

Software Engineering at Kairos

Everything that Kairos does is driven by software, from recording sensor data while flying at 3000', to ephemeral high-scale cloud-native data processing, to computer-aided GIS analysis, to using machine-learning to extract structured information from geopixels.

The software engineering team is involved in every step of our process, building the automation that allows Kairos to not only image things that humans have never seen before but to do it reliably, repeatably, inexpensively, and quickly. (Yes, you can have all four).

We work primarily in Python, with a smattering of Bash, SQL, Terraform, and Typescript when it makes sense.

We work on single-board-computers, field laptops, in virtualized cloud environments, in containers, inside of web browsers, and even inside lab automation frameworks.

We practice compositional engineering, tying together disparate pieces of technology to create novel artifacts that solve real-world problems.

We practice continuous integration and deployment, automated testing, and have a lovely monorepo.

In short, it's a playground for the skilled generalist.

Software Engineering Manager

Our Software Engineering team is comprised of twelve people. In addition to our VP of Software Engineering and our CTO, we have ten software engineers. At the moment, all of the engineers report to our VP, so we are seeking a couple of experienced Software Engineering managers who can help build, support, and lead our teams as we go through rapid scaling.

We are looking for managers who are able to shift between people leadership and hands-on technical work. We seek professionals who understand the importance of psychological safety. We want our leaders to act as coaches, balancing structure with flexibility so that developers are given clear direction and the resources they need to achieve their goals alongside lots of autonomy.

At Kairos, we solve problems by integrating one or more pieces of new technology, which means that our engineers are tackling novel problems. That’s why we hire people who desire to solve real-world issues over working on technical quandaries in isolation - none of our work fits in neat boxes. Instead, we have a team that is focused on the impact our work can have on the future of life on the planet and prioritizes real-world progress over problem-focus purity.

Responsibilities
  • Use organizational goals to align strategy, process, and decision making such that leadership goals and priorities are set and communicated to the team
  • Work with other leaders in the engineering org to develop, drive, and fine-tune the technical roadmap so that it is nimble enough to accommodate potential upcoming requirements
  • Hold weekly meetings with direct reports to clearly set expectations, review performance and code, provide feedback, and mentor team members on advanced technical issues
  • Ensure team adherence to best practices
  • Act as a coach, guiding engineers toward skill development, career growth, and resources. Empower engineers to do their best work
  • Help engineering team architect and implement well-vetted complex systems at scale
  • Use your expert knowledge in scalability, reliability, system architecture, and engineering best practices to guide engineers as they help design optimal systems
  • Help define our technical architecture and promote solid and coherent architectural strategies to the team
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent hands-on experience
  • 3+ years of experience in software engineering management
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering (with significant Python background)
  • Startup experience
  • The ability to learn quickly in a self-guided manner
  • An intimate understanding of at least three of our primary domains - cloud data processing, machine learning, statistical signal analysis, GIS analysis and processing, DevOps / systems engineering, scientific data visualization, software engineering, and release/build engineering
  • A belief in modern development practices - we do things like code reviews, unit testing, minimal-viable products, and fast development iteration. We eschew the zealous practice of any development-process religion, but we do pick and choose techniques that help us write better software
Desired
  • Professional experience in front-end web development (React a plus)

Life at Kairos

A few important facts about working at Kairos Aerospace:

- We provide health, dental, and vision insurance, including subsidized coverage for dependents. Our 401K plan does matching based on the amount of methane we removed from the atmosphere in a given year.

- We think death-march hours are a bad way to run a company. We expect something approximating a 40-hour workweek, but mostly we just care that your work gets done. No, really. (Full disclosure: we occasionally put in some extra hours during crunch periods, but that is the exception, not the norm).

- We do not track vacation time, nor do we have set hours to be in the office. Instead, we encourage taking real vacations, mental health days, leaving early to pick up the kids, working from home, time-shifting commutes, staying home when you're sick, ducking out to the gym - we believe work time should be flexible.

In this time of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have transitioned to 100% remote work aside from hardware and flight operations and plan to continue having remote positions in perpetuity.

(We love it when kids make a cameo in a video call.)

How To Find Flexible Remote Jobs That Allow You To Work From Home or Anywhere

Trying to find a flexible remote job? You should search for different terms depending on exactly the type of job you’re looking for. Some of the most common search terms include:

  • Remote Jobs
  • Work From Home Jobs
  • Online Jobs
  • Flexible Jobs
  • Telecommuting Jobs
  • Freelance Jobs

Times have changed, and so has the workforce. Gone are the days of geographical limitations on who companies can hire. Digital nomads are on the rise, but they’re not the only ones looking for flexible jobs. Stay-at-home moms, people with physical mobility issues, and myriad more can benefit from the option to work from home.

You can find all of the types of jobs listed above on our site, and while many of those terms can be used synonymously, it’s good to be able to define them and know what you’re looking for so that you can find a job that’s the best fit for you.

Remote Jobs

A truly remote job allows you to work from anywhere, with no restrictions on timezone, state, or country. So if you’re hoping to be a proper digital nomad, make sure you’re looking for remote jobs. It’s also worth noting that most “remote jobs” are considered full-time roles.

You can learn more about the definition of remote jobs here. Note, Many companies will mention that a job gives you the option to work remotely - it’s good to clarify whether they mean the position can be done remotely full time, or if what they’re really offering are home office days. Phrasing like “option to work remotely once a week” should make it clear that you’re expected to be physically present the rest of the time.

Work From Home Jobs

“Work from home jobs” is one of the most common search terms for folks looking to break away from the restrictions of a traditional office. In fact, it returns 10 times as many results as “remote jobs.” So if you want to cast your net wide, then this may be the way to go… But “work from home jobs” can function as a bit of a catch-all - unlike a search for remote jobs, which will tend to return a number of legitimate full-time opportunities like the ones on our site, work from home jobs can mean a lot of different things. Everything from teaching English online to selling your crafts on Etsy would be considered work from home jobs.

Unlike remote jobs, work from home jobs don’t necessarily mean you’ll have the support of an employer… it’s literally any job that you can do from home. So if you want to see the full breadth of non-office jobs/work that’s available, search for “work from home jobs”... but if you want a full-time role with a 401k that lets you work from anywhere, consider a more tailored search for “remote jobs.”

Online Jobs

“Online jobs” returns even more searches than work from home jobs. Online jobs are any jobs that you can do just by being connected to the internet. Lots of these jobs are part-time, pay by the hour type roles. Think English teacher, online tutor, part-time blogger, resume writer… they tend to be very gig focused, and companies offering these roles will almost always pay you by the hour. Great if you want flexibility, not necessarily if you want stability.

Flexible Jobs

Flexible jobs can mean a lot of different things. You can have an in-office job that’s flexible because you’re allowed to set your own hours. Or because you’re allowed to work from home a certain number of days each month. It might also mean working part-time (or having the option to).

Flexible jobs can also be remote or work from home jobs in which you’re allowed to set your own schedule (though you should note, not all remote/virtual/online jobs are actually flexible - many of them assign strict hours). In conclusion, flexible jobs mean a lot of different things to different people, but if the ability to set your own schedule is important to you, you should definitely be looking for flexible jobs - regardless of whether they’re remote or in-office.

Telecommuting Jobs

A lot of jobs listed as remote jobs are actually telecommuting jobs. Telecommuting jobs are full-time roles with companies who can offer you the flexibility to work from home 99% of the time, but might need you to reside in a certain physical location or time zone due to practical constraints. (You can learn more about the tax reasons for this here.) You might be expected to occasionally go to the office for trainings, or you might need to meet in person with clients in a certain area. These jobs are great if you want both a high degree of flexibility and stability, while remaining in your current area. They’re not ideal for would-be digital nomads.

Freelance Jobs

Freelance jobs are booming in today’s gig economy. They afford you a lot of flexibility because you set your own schedule, and oftentimes your prices. But as noted with online jobs, a lot of times, you’re “freelancing” for a company even though you’re really working for them almost full time.. But instead of paying you as a full-time employee, they’re paying you by the hour or by the product. This is often less preferable to a full-time remote job that offers more stability and better pay. That said, searching for freelance jobs online can be a helpful way to launch your own freelance career. Maybe you start doing freelance work on gig sites like Fiverr, but are ultimately able to go out on your own once you’ve built up a portfolio and client list. It’s at this point that freelance work can become truly lucrative. It’s worth noting that not all freelance work can be done remotely - depending on your skill-sets, you may need to be able to meet in person with your clients.
