DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

We are looking for a talented Electronic Systems Engineer – Hardware to join our team specializing in Diagnostics for our location in Columbus, IN . In this role, you will contribute to the development, tuning, validation, and support of diagnostic strategies and electronic hardware that enable reliable engine and system performance. You will work hands‑on with electronic components, collaborate with cross‑functional teams, and apply strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills to support high‑quality product outcomes. This position offers the opportunity to apply both technical depth and system‑level thinking while growing expertise in diagnostics, hardware behavior, and product development processes.

Daily responsibilities include answering team‑owned component technical profile questions for global customers, tuning assigned diagnostics, and performing testing and reporting to review boards to demonstrate that diagnostic features meet defined performance requirements. You will also conduct hands‑on evaluations of electronic hardware at local test benches using meters, oscilloscopes, and Cummins‑developed software tools to assess behavior, validate functionality, and support diagnostic transparency testing. Success in this role requires strong proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, the ability to communicate and present effectively in team settings, and a commitment to developing advanced problem‑solving capabilities.

From a technical perspective, you will need the ability to read and interpret schematics, analyze and model circuits using simulation tools, and understand electrical component datasheets to support diagnostic modeling and transparency assessments. A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is required for this role. While not mandatory, working knowledge of automotive gas or diesel engine systems is considered a valuable plus, helping accelerate learning and enhance system‑level contribution in diagnostics and electronic hardware performance.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Electronic Hardware Problem Resolution: Investigate hardware issues by identifying causal mechanisms, recommending corrective actions, and documenting outcomes while collaborating with more experienced team members.
  • Process & Tool Improvement: Apply and support continuous improvement of electronic hardware development processes, including problem‑solving techniques, requirements analysis, and standardized engineering workflows.
  • Advanced Design Method Application: Utilize design methods such as worst‑case analysis, circuit simulation, DFMEA/PFMEA, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), schematic capture, and compliance matrices to ensure robust and reliable hardware solutions.
  • Supplier Collaboration & Prototype Delivery: Obtain input from electronic suppliers and coordinate prototype hardware delivery to application engineering teams to support development timelines.
  • Engineering Decision Making: Make informed decisions related to hardware requirements and validation testing that influence unit cost, functionality, manufacturability, and prototype readiness.
  • Ownership of Moderately Complex Systems: Lead problem resolution for components, subsystems, or systems with increasing technical complexity and ambiguity as experience grows in the role.
  • Independent Execution & Process Engagement: Execute established engineering processes independently while contributing to ongoing system and workflow improvements and expanding technical product knowledge.
  • Team Collaboration & Work Coordination: Contribute effectively to team goals, support coordination of work among technicians or student employees when required, and continue developing key competencies essential to success in the role.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Design and Application of Mechatronic Systems: Apply technical knowledge to specify, integrate, and optimize electronic hardware and interconnections that measure and control system performance, ensuring seamless application within Cummins products.
  • Electrical & Mechanical System Design Expertise: Develop and specify electrical components, controllers, and system architectures across electrified and electronics‑based platforms; ensure designs meet both Cummins and customer performance expectations through thoughtful integration of electrical and mechanical considerations.
  • Product Failure Mode Avoidance: Proactively identify potential failure modes by analyzing system interfaces, functions, requirements, and influencing factors; apply structured methodologies to improve reliability and ensure robust product performance throughout the lifecycle.
  • Product Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis: Influence product design decisions through effective use and interpretation of modeling tools and computational methods that predict functional behavior at the system, subsystem, and component level.
  • Product Problem Solving: Lead structured problem‑solving efforts that protect the customer, determine root causes, implement data‑driven solutions, and address systemic issues to prevent recurrence and strengthen long‑term product quality.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
  • Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

  • Entry level/Early career professional.
  • Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area.
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools is also preferred
