Job Summary:
As part of a formal apprenticeship or regional training program, assists Product Design Technicians to learn and develop the skills necessary to obtain a regionally applicable, Certification as an Experienced Technician (e.g. US Department of Labor). Independently performs work to help support area needs during work rotations in other applicable teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Develops capability to ensure model and drawing quality. Learns to create and maintain product specifications utilizing Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing. Utilizes Computer Aided Design (CAD) data management tools for configuration control and to maintain security. Acquires knowledge to apply company, industry, national, and international standards. Learns to processes internal engineering work requests. Engages with required functional areas as needed. Attends classes and training programs and makes appropriate progress necessary to build skill and knowledge.
Learns to create and maintain quality engineering product drawings and solid models through the application of company, industry, national, and international
standards.
Assists with the processing of internal engineering Work Requests; with the Technician or Associate, communicates and works with originators of the Work
Requests; learns to deliver completed work requests on schedule or contact the customer to modify the schedule as necessary.
Learns to engage with required functional areas to review completed drawings and models and assists with modifications as needed.
Assists with the design of components through layout studies and dimensional stack ups.
Attends classes and training programs and makes appropriate progress necessary to build basic skills and knowledge required to pass Department of Labor
certification examinations.
Assists technicians and engineers as required.
Learns and applies appropriate Company and department rules and guidelines to work.
Participates in the maintenance of quality procedures.
Participates in improvement projects.
Maintains cleanliness within the workplace.
Learns and complies with departmental safety policies and procedures.
Demonstrates confidentiality as required.
Participates in self- and team-audits and associated corrective action.
Performs other miscellaneous duties, as required, to get the job done.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Competencies:
Mechanical Design Modeling and Analysis - Creates Computer Aided Design models in accordance with Cummins' standards to represent architectural or product level system design concepts, and to enable completion of various system-level computer analyses such as Dimensional Variation Analysis and Finite Element Analysis.
Mechanical Design of Mechanical Systems - Acquires and applies an in-depth understanding of mechanical systems through working knowledge that guides a designer’s ability to create innovative and sound design concepts to meet Cummins and customer expectations; designs for requirements of all lifecycle stages by considering the customer requirements in different operating environments to ensure a robust system.
Mechanical Design Specification - Creates complete specifications in the form of solid models, configured engineering bill of materials and detailed drawings that cross-functionally communicate the information required to manufacture and inspect a product per its design intent; considers national, international, industry, and Cummins’ standards that accurately and concisely define the part specification.
Product Configuration and Change Management - Establishes a baseline of identified product artifacts to be placed under configuration management; releases, tracks, controls and communicates changes from concept to obsolescence often through work requests; establishes and maintains the integrity of the product artifact baselines.

STEM Testing Requirements for new apprentices
Requires some work experience and intermediate level knowledge obtained through training or on-the-job experience.
Applicants must be program ready at the time of application submission to be considered. Program readiness can be proven by:
- Providing a college transcript proving a passing grade in a pre-requisite math course, making the applicant ready to enroll in Ivy Tech MATH 136.
- Completing the Knowledge Assessment (STEM path) through Ivy Tech and providing a screenshot of a passing score of 70 or more.

To complete the Knowledge Assessment:
- Apply to Ivy Tech at ivytech.edu as courses only, if asked.
- Receive acceptance and instructions to set up your account via email.
- Setup your MyIvy account and click the link labeled "Knowledge Assessment."
- Select STEM Math. If this option is not on your screen, click "enter a key to join private goals" and enter "STEM." If prompted for a key at any point once you have access to this assessment, enter "STEM."
- Complete the initial assessment. If you do not earn a score of 70 or more, complete the remediation with the EdReady system. By completing the remediation, you will reach the target score.
- Submit a screenshot of your final score to prove program readiness.
Education, Licenses, Certifications:
High school diploma, GED or equivalent required.
Must meet the minimum educational requirements to be “Program Ready” to start the apprenticeship program.
Registration in a certified apprenticeship learning program required (for example, a Department of Labor certified program).
Experience:
Minimal or no work experience required.
