Senior Data Engineer - Vice President - Data & Analytics Engineering

We’re seeking someone to join Wealth Management Technology Team as a Senior Data Engineer in Unified Middle Office Team who has hands-on experience in SQL Server, SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services), and Python. The ideal candidate will have an extensive background in designing, developing, and maintaining ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to support enterprise-level data solutions. This role requires strong analytical skills, an eye for detail, and a passion for optimizing data workflows to drive business insights and operational efficiency.

About Super Department:

Middle office is a core foundation for E*TRADE. It provides the platform with key capabilities to support customer digital journey from opening an account, funding the account, trade and order management, portfolio/balances and risk management on all digital channels. It also provides the capabilities for E*TRADE B2B stock plan business to manage participants lifecycle.

This is a Principal Data & Analytics Engineering position at Vice President level, provides specialist data analysis and expertise that drive decision-making and business insights as well as crafting data pipelines, implementing data models,  optimizing data processes for improved data accuracy and accessibility, including applying machine learning and AI-based techniques...

What you'll do in the role: 

  • Lead the end-to-end development, enhancement, and support of key Wealth Management technology applications and services, ensuring reliability and scalability within a highly regulated environment.

  • Partner closely with product leads, business stakeholders, and cross-functional technical teams to continuously identify and implement improvements to Morgan Stanley’s Wealth Management platforms.

  • Provide strategic technical leadership throughout the software development lifecycle—defining architectural standards, technology roadmaps, and driving the long-term vision for Java centric solutions.

  • Architect resilient, performant, and secure cloud ready large-scale systems that support Morgan Stanley’s Wealth Management business objectives.

  • Manage, mentor, and grow a team of software engineers; set clear priorities, provide technical coaching, and oversee the delivery of mission-critical projects.

  • Champion agile development practices and encourage a culture of engineering excellence, innovation, and compliance.

  • Collaborate with product managers and other technology leaders to translate complex business requirements into effective, scalable, and maintainable technical solutions.

  • Act as a subject matter expert for Wealth Management technologies (e.g., Java, distributed systems, cloud adoption, API integration), providing guidance and technical oversight across projects.

  • Track, evaluate, and drive continuous improvement in team performance, delivery velocity, quality, and system health.

  • Own estimation, planning, and execution of technology initiatives—working closely with internal/external partners and stakeholders to ensure alignment and transparent communication.

What you'll bring to the role:  

  • Bring over 12 years of specialised experience in advanced application engineering, with deep expertise in SSIS, SQL Server, Python, and ETL frameworks. Demonstrated capability in architecting, designing, and implementing highly scalable, enterprise-grade data integration solutions for complex production environments.

  • Possess comprehensive proficiency in managing the full ETL lifecycle with SSIS—including solution design, development, deployment, orchestration, and operational management—to ensure seamless data extraction, transformation, and loading across heterogeneous data sources.

  • Show strong programming ability in Python, applying it for data manipulation, automated ETL pipeline orchestration, and integration with third-party tools and APIs for end-to-end data engineering workflows.

  • Proven expertise in architecting, optimising, and maintaining large-scale, mission-critical ETL pipelines and data flows, ensuring reliability, resilience, and high performance in enterprise settings.

  • Demonstrate exceptional analytical and diagnostic skills, using methodical approaches to resolve complex data engineering challenges while upholding data integrity and quality.

  • Skilled in communicating complex technical concepts to diverse audiences and producing thorough technical documentation.

  • Hands-on experience collaborating within Agile and cross-functional engineering teams, contributing to iterative delivery cycles and fostering continuous improvement.

  • Design, implement, and administer ETL solutions using SSIS and Python, integrating disparate data sources into optimised SQL Server environments, and developing, tuning, and maintaining stored procedures and queries for efficiency and storage optimisation.

  • Work closely with business analysts, data scientists, and stakeholders to translate data requirements into scalable, maintainable engineering solutions.

  • Continuously monitor and enhance ETL workflows, employing advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis to improve system performance and data quality.

  • Author and maintain documentation on data engineering standards and best practices to ensure compliance and effective knowledge transfer across teams.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, sharing expertise in SQL Server, SSIS, Python, and ETL methodologies to elevate team capability.

  • Stay abreast of emerging trends in data engineering, database architecture, and ETL technologies, proactively evaluating and adopting new tools and techniques to advance platform capabilities and maintain technical excellence.

  • At least 6 years' relevant experience would generally be expected to find the skills required for this role.
