DESCRIPTION
This product risk–focused position manages and executes critical reliability activities within new product development to meet customer and business reliability expectations. The role is responsible for preventing, detecting, and correcting product failures and continuously improving product reliability. The position may also contribute to establishing, maintaining, and improving common global tools, methods, and processes used to assess and enhance product reliability across Cummins.
This role is part of the Cummins Services Quality Team and operates as a recognized specialist within the immediate team or discipline area.
Key Responsibilities
- Obtain inputs from new product technical and core teams, negotiate priorities, and deliver plans to meet critical reliability deliverables for new product development leadership.
- Make technical decisions related to product problem prevention, detection, and correction that impact overall product reliability.
- Apply, execute, and improve quantitative reliability analysis processes, failure reporting systems, and corrective/preventive action tools to support data-driven decision-making.
- Independently lead smaller projects with business impact or own complex components, systems, products, or services with full accountability.
- Execute established and emerging reliability work processes while continuing to develop product and technology knowledge.
- Lead the development and improvement of reliability work processes and systems across the functional discipline at the site or business unit level.
- Coordinate and direct work among technicians, interns, and temporary employees; support knowledge transfer to less-experienced engineers.
- Provide technical guidance and influence technical direction within project teams.
- Support launch readiness assessments using prescribed indicators, risk scales, and tracking methods to reduce reliability risk.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Skills and Technical Competencies
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of engine and genset systems , including parts functions and failure modes.
- Proficiency in handling large datasets and deriving meaningful insights.
- Experience or exposure to Excel programming (VBA) and Power Pivot is desirable.
- Knowledge of statistical and reliability software such as Minitab, Weibull, Winsmith, JMP, R Programming is preferred.
- Understanding of engine performance measurement , ECM, and CE components is desirable.
- Awareness of warranty data analysis and life data analysis methodologies.
- Experience working in Service and Quality functions is advantageous.
Reliability & Engineering Competencies
- Product Failure Mode Avoidance: Identify interfaces, functional requirements, interactions, noise/control factors, and prioritized failure modes to improve system reliability.
- Failure Reporting & Corrective/Preventive Action: Lead structured processes to record, prioritize, analyze, and resolve failures using cross-functional collaboration and disciplined problem-solving.
- Product Function Modeling & Simulation: Apply analytical and computational tools to influence product design decisions at system, subsystem, and component levels.
- Product Problem Solving: Implement robust, data-based solutions that protect the customer and prevent recurrence through root cause identification.
- Product Reliability & Risk Management: Plan and manage reliability activities throughout new product development to ensure durable, reliable product launches.
- Quantitative Reliability Analysis: Establish failure rate models, assess reliability targets, compare design alternatives, and verify improvement effectiveness.
- Reliability Test Planning: Develop system-level and accelerated reliability test plans considering confidence levels, sample size, stresses, environments, and usage conditions.

Experience
- Prior Senior Engineer or Lead Engineer–equivalent experience in a relevant discipline area.
- Proven track record of technical problem-solving , quality decision-making, and reliability improvement.
- Experience with reliability tools, failure analysis, and cross-functional collaboration is required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (BE/BTech) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics , or related discipline.
- Specialization in Reliability Engineering is preferred.
- Post-graduate (Master’s) degree in a relevant discipline may be required for select roles.
- CRE / ASQ or equivalent reliability certification is an added advantage.
- Six Sigma Yellow Belt or Green Belt certification preferred.
