Job Details

Stryker presents an exciting opportunity to join a highly motivated R&D team in developing key technology to enable the evolution of new surgical techniques in electrosurgery. The successful candidate will work with a multi-disciplined team at our Innovation Centre in Cork and focus on establishing the needs of our customers while designing and bringing innovative solutions for electrosurgery applications to market.

The Innovation Centre, which features unique design and collaboration workspaces, state-of-the-art prototyping and test facilities, and a simulated operating room, is the first of its kind in Ireland. The centre focuses on the development of new technologies and products to improve patient safety and outcomes during surgery, and increase operating room efficiency across multiple surgical specialties including neuro, spine, ENT and orthopaedic surgery.

The successful candidate will design, develop, refine and evaluate electro-mechanical components, assemblies or subsystems for electro-mechanical medical devices.

You will use concurrent engineering and rapid prototyping techniques to reduce product time to market whilst adhering to project deadlines and product costs.   You will plan and execute successful product development projects, occasionally leading and training team members on technical aspects of product commercialization.

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Lead or mentor design and development of electrical components, sub-systems, and/or systems for medical devices.
  • Apply and mentor others on advanced engineering theories, principles, and concepts.
  • Conduct, design, and select advanced prototyping and testing.
  • Lead and guide in correction of complex product design issues.
  • Conduct technology exploration and influence application in the business.
  • Translate user needs to design inputs/ specifications and produce complex system level designs independently.
  • Develop a number of invention disclosures, patents or trade secrets.
  • Independently make design tradeoff decisions while designing multiple components of the system.
  • Lead the Design and Implementation of High Energy Electrical Sub Systems for Patient- Connected Medical Devices,
  • Translate clinical and system-level needs into electrical requirements, specifications and architectures.

Business Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to competitive and market strategy by demonstrating in-depth knowledge of the market, customer dynamics and competitive offerings.
  • Apply strong understanding of clinical procedures to enhance product development.
  • Contribute to and execute customer facing activities like voice of customer and customer centric design in partnership with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates financial acumen.

Med Device Compliance:

  • Mentor others as a business unit expert on the usage of industry standards, including design requirements and test strategies per applicable regulations.
  • Lead others to create and refine engineering documentation, such as the Design History file and creates more progressive technical content.
  • Contribute to R&D procedures and development of industry standards working closely with cross-functional business units.

General Responsibilities:

  • Work cooperatively with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing and Project Management to ensure project success, both leading and influencing other leaders on the team.
  • Identify and lead the creation of or improvements to procedures, policies, processes, systems, and technology required.
  • Execute and lead segments of complex product development to advance projects through the design /development/launch process.
  • Contribute to complex product development through release and lead one technical area of expertise.
  • Hold self and others accountable to deliver high quality results with passion, energy and drive to meet business priorities.
  • Mentor, develop and inspire others in current and future roles.

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to lead or teach electrical engineers in electrical design.
  • Advanced understanding of the design of complex components and sub-systems.
  • Ability to apply advanced circuit and electrical system test methods.
  • Advanced understanding of manufacturing and testing methods.
  • Ability to apply standard technologies used in industry.
  • Ability to perform complex electrical stackups.
  • Advanced understanding of statistical methods. 
  • Advanced knowledge of sub-system, system, and environmental interactions.

Preferred Skills / Engineering tools:

  • Understands the advanced theory and methods of Power Electronics and Energy Delivery, RF, Electromagnetics, Measurement Sensing and Control Interfaces, Standards & Control theory and can lead teams in its application while demonstrating:
  • Direct, hands-on experience designing custom magnetics, including high-frequency isolation transformers

Power Electronics and energy Delivery,

  • Deep, in-depth power electronics design expertise, Experience with resonant and quasi-resonant topologies (e.g. Class D, E, F, LLC or related)
  • Experience designing HV DC/DC converters
  • Experience with power amplifier design for high-energy delivery into non-linear loads
  • Design experience involving kV-range peak voltages, high crest factors, and dynamic loading
  • Experience operating in the kHz to low-MHz frequency domain (explicitly not GHz wireless or antenna systems)

RF

  • Proficiency in the design and analysis of RF circuits including simulation and EMI/EMC
  • Ability to use network analyzers and other test and measurement equipment to characterize performance and troubleshoot issues
  • Ability to guide printed-circuit and cable design in order to meet RF performance criteria
  • Understanding of various RF protocol communication standards (e.g. ISO 15693, etc.)

Electromagnetics

  • Knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements from internationally recognized standards
  • Ability work closely with software, mechanical, and electrical engineering disciplines to implement EMC best practices and execute testing at internal/external labs
  • Understanding of parasitic effects within systems, cables, and PCB designs, including resulting system effects
  • Expertise in Electromagnetic energy control concepts, including impedance control methodologies, EM energy control concepts, and current control concepts
  • Understanding of wavelength calculations, Fourier analysis of waveforms, shielding mechanisms, and conducted, radiated, capacitive, and inductive coupling mechanisms

Measurement, Sensing & Control Interfaces

  • Experience designing circuits in environments with high dv/dt and high common-mode noise
  • Ability to define clean electrical interfaces and constraints for embedded software, DSP, or FPGA-based control systems
    (primary ownership of FPGA RTL or DSP firmware is not required for this role)

Standards

  • Understanding of the regulatory requirements of standards and their applicability and the interaction of standards with risk management
  • Proficiency in reading standards correctly (scope, transition periods, use of Parts 1 and 2 of standards series), and understanding of the interplay between standards
  • Knowledge of use terms (e.g. normal condition, essential performance, MOOP, MOPP, PEMS, PESS), and ability to create insulation diagrams
  • Ability to conduct standard testing, analyze results, root cause issues; and provide cost-effective, manufacturable design recommendations

Control Theory

  • Expertise in time domain and frequency domain analysis techniques to characterize, analyze, and optimize system performance and accuracy
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink (or equivalent) to create dynamic models of physical systems and simulate them
  • Ability to conceptualize, develop, optimize, and integrate new algorithms for monitoring and controlling complex electromechanical systems
  • Understanding of design and tuning techniques for PID controllers and other topologies (e.g., state space controllers, Kalman filters, observers)

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in EE or related discipline & 6+ years of work experience
