Location and relocation
This role is open to candidates based worldwide.
For candidates relocating to Berlin, Germany, a relocation package is available and includes support for the employee and their immediate family.

About the role
We are hiring an Engineering Manager, Backend (Logistics) to lead and grow a backend engineering team working on large-scale, distributed systems that support a global delivery platform.
This role combines people leadership, technical leadership, and execution ownership. You will be responsible for guiding engineers’ growth, ensuring strong technical decision-making, and delivering reliable backend services aligned with product and business goals.
You will work closely with product managers, engineering leaders, and cross-functional partners in a complex, multi-region environment where systems operate at scale and correctness, availability, and performance matter.
What you will do
- Lead and support a backend engineering team, fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-performing team culture.
- Own people management responsibilities, including performance management, feedback, career development, and growth planning.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership for backend systems built on JVM-based technologies in cloud-based, distributed environments.
- Actively contribute to architectural decisions, technical design, and code reviews, and support problem-solving in highly scalable backend systems.
- Guide the design, development, testing, and deployment of reliable, production-grade backend services.
- Partner with product and business stakeholders to plan and execute work in iterative cycles aligned with product and business goals.
- Ensure strong engineering practices across the full software development lifecycle, including quality, testing, and operational readiness.
- Promote shared ownership beyond deployment, including system reliability, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
What we are looking for
- 7+ years of overall professional experience in software engineering.
- 1.5+ years of people management experience, with demonstrated involvement in performance reviews, feedback, and team growth (not only technical leadership).
- Strong backend engineering background with deep experience in JVM languages (Java, Kotlin, Scala). Experience with other compiled languages (e.g. Go, C++, Rust) is also valued and taken into consideration.
- Experience building and operating systems in cloud-based, distributed environments (preference for AWS).
- Solid understanding of API-based and event-driven architectures, including HTTP/gRPC and messaging systems (e.g. Kafka, SNS/SQS).
- Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Strong grasp of modern software engineering practices across the SDLC.
- Proven ability to plan, prioritize, and execute work collaboratively in agile environments.
- Pragmatic leadership style, focused on outcomes, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Fluent English communication skills.

- Previous experience in food delivery, ride-hailing, logistics, or other gig-economy platforms.
