Job Summary

As part of a formal skilled trades training program, the Automation / Electrical Maintenance Technician – Apprentice supports site Electricians and automation teams in maintaining and improving manufacturing equipment reliability. Working under direct guidance, the role focuses on developing electrical, automation, and machine safety skills while supporting equipment uptime, preventive maintenance, breakdown troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives. The apprentice is required to complete defined classroom training and a minimum number of documented on-the-job training hours while learning to work safely with electrical and automated industrial systems.

Key Responsibilities Equipment Reliability & Maintenance

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose daily machine-related breakdowns to restore operations efficiently.
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities on time to maintain asset health and reliability.
  • Support emergency, corrective, predictive, and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Conduct routine Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Why-Why analysis to reduce repeat failures.
  • Drive improvements in equipment uptime by reducing MTTR and increasing MTBF.
  • Apply basic analytics and data analysis to identify downtime trends and improvement actions.
  • Support development, review, and maintenance of critical spare parts lists and inventory.

Automation & Controls

  • Assist with electrical system troubleshooting to return machines to proper operating condition.
  • Support machine programming, PLC logic development, and automation enhancements under supervision.
  • Gain hands-on exposure to Siemens TIA Portal, servo drives, and industrial automation systems.
  • Support integration and maintenance of robotic systems, conveyors, vision systems, and PLC interfaces.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Comply with all Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Stop work and immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, or hazards.
  • Apply LOTO, HIRA, and machine safety principles to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Recognize and mitigate electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic control hazards.
  • Follow process documentation, quality procedures, and work instructions.
  • Perform quality inspections and raise issues to minimize cost, safety, and quality risks.

Continuous Improvement & Teamwork

  • Participate in key projects and continuous improvement initiatives, including TPM activities.
  • Identify manufacturing constraints and support problem-solving and process improvement efforts.
  • Drive cost-saving initiatives through waste reduction, efficiency improvements, and better maintenance practices.
  • Conduct on-the-job training for new team members as skills develop and provide team support.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area, including routine housekeeping and machine cleaning.

Training & Development

  • Attend required technical and safety training classes to build electrical and automation skills.
  • Complete all required on-the-job training hours and document learning progress.
  • Actively engage in self-development and learning opportunities aligned with business needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or certificate of completion of secondary education, or equivalent experience meeting applicable regulations.
  • Willingness and ability to complete a formal skilled trades or apprenticeship training program.
  • Ability to meet licensing or certification requirements related to export controls or sanctions regulations, where applicable.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Intermediate-level technical knowledge gained through education, training, or hands-on experience.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of electrical systems, industrial automation, and machine controls.
  • Hands-on exposure to Siemens TIA Portal, servo drive handling, programming, and troubleshooting (preferred).
  • Knowledge of machine safety systems and industrial safety practices, including LOTO and HIRA.
  • Strong logical thinking, analytical skills, and structured problem-solving capability.
  • Familiarity with robotic systems such as Yaskawa and ABB robots (preferred).
  • Experience or exposure to Robot Studio or equivalent robotic programming platforms.
  • Understanding of robot safety standards and regulations (ISO, ANSI/RIA).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively, communicate clearly, and work as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Commitment to health, safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience

  • Minimal or no prior work experience required.
  • 2 to 4 years of experience in automation, electrical maintenance, or machine maintenance preferred for external candidates.
  • Hands-on exposure to manufacturing equipment, automation systems, or electrical maintenance is an advantage.
