Job Purpose

The Strategic Project Finance Specialist is a key member of the Project Management Office (PMO). This role serves as the financial backbone of the project portfolio, ensuring business cases are financially sound, forecasts are accurate, and expenditures are properly classified and traceable.

The Specialist partners with executive leadership and Project Managers to bring financial clarity and discipline to the project lifecycle—from initial business case development through execution and closeout. This position is ideal for a finance professional who thrives at the intersection of accounting, project management, and strategy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Partner with Project Management and executive leadership to evaluate and refine business cases, ensuring financial clarity, ROI viability, and traceability.
  • Develop financial models aligned with corporate strategy, incorporating sensitivity and risk-adjusted analysis.
  • Monitor project budgets, forecasts, and actual expenditures across the portfolio; perform monthly variance analysis and reconciliation.
  • Partner with Project Managers and Accounting to properly classify CapEx vs. OpEx, ensuring compliance with capitalization policy.Validate and report on cross-charging between departments and legal entities.
  • Provide portfolio-level insights to PMO leadership, including performance trends and financial risks.
  • Enforce financial governance and control processes to maintain accuracy and transparency.
  • Support continuous improvement in financial tracking, reporting, and forecasting tools within the PMO, as well as other related tasks as assigned.
  • Utilize Planisware, SAP, Baan, and Excel for project portfolio financial management

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field required; advanced degree or certification (CPA, CMA, CFA, PMP) preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in finance, accounting, or project portfolio management, ideally within engineering, manufacturing, or technology industries.
  • Expertise in financial modeling, forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Familiarity with CapEx vs. OpEx accounting, cross-charging, and project cost allocation.
  • Experience with enterprise finance and project systems (Planisware, SAP, Baan, Excel required; Power BI a plus).
  • Strong analytical, communication, and collaboration skills; able to influence cross-functional stakeholders.
