Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) brings together American Express' merchant-and network-related businesses to enable a sharp focus on using the power of our network to provide unique value to all of our mutual customers. The organization manages the relationships with the millions of merchants around the world that accept American Express and runs the company’s payment network and manages bank partnerships globally.
The Global Strategy & Capabilities (GS&C) group’s mission is to become essential to merchants and partners globally by delivering an easy, frictionless, value-added experience that enables them to meet their goals and serve their customers. This role is a part of a new organization within GS&C called Risk Advisory & Legal Entity Governance, and we consist of a diverse set of teams that support the Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) business, being a robust first line of defense.
Our team plays an active role in ensuring that our acquiring businesses across 30+ countries have a robust first line of defense. We ensure they meet their growth objectives by providing risk expertise across all operational risk pillars to the GMNS Front Line and Control Management areas to facilitate comprehensive identification and management of operational and regulatory risk/changes. Our organization assesses the optimal risk mitigation in support of business growth initiatives, and supporting our Legal Entities manage non-financial risk.
How will you make an impact in this role?
The role reports into a Risk Advisory and Legal Entity Governance Manager of American Express Payments Europe (AEPE) and will be responsible for non-financial risk advisory for Nordic and Baltics Global Merchant Services (GMS) Business and Legal Entity Governance processes for AEPE branch of Sweden, including support to other Legal Entity Governance duties across AEPE.
By actively supporting the merchant acquiring business, we can partner with the business to assess, mitigate and drive decision making towards risk, helping them to navigate the Legal Entity Governance process. By doing so, the business can deliver on their objectives, and executing effectively against local and central control management and compliance expectations, contributing to growth initiatives and of the Legal Entity.
Responsibilities of the incumbent will include:

Issue Management – support/advice on root cause risk analysis as needed, assessing optimal risk mitigation and engagement of relevant stakeholders. Proactively seek to prevent customer-impacting issues via effective process definition and control design in alignment with Control Management, Compliance and Front-Line GMS teams.

Legal Entity Governance framework: in support of the Operational Risk Advisory, direct leader, ensuring that the Governance Framework adopted locally is effective and streamlined in alignment with American Express Governance Standards and the Legal Entity protocols. Support the analysis, assessment, documentation and preparation of Committees, providing the right risk oversight and risk articulation to facilitate Committee decision making.

Enabling business growth and supporting change management: support and manage the risk assessment process for all new products, platforms, and capabilities locally, supporting and enabling Front-Line GMS business growth. Including navigation of the New Product Approval management policy and Control Management governing standards.

Audit Engagement – provide support on audit management, educating partners and key stakeholders about proper audit engagement, provide recommendations especially on pre-audit submissions of managed-self-identified findings, and during the observation and findings phase alignment for operational risk advisory input.

Regulatory Change Management (RCM)- partner with Compliance, Global Counsel’s Office and Control Management to understand requirements for the business. Support Control Management in the assignation of local business unit project manager within Front-Line GMS teams, articulating risk assessment on the regulatory changes.

Control and Compliance (C&C) control metric analysis: understand the C&C dashboard metrics, including trends, aging, recurrency. Ensure General Management has appropriate visibility on key operational risk messages, implications and risks at stake. Articulate risks and options to facilitate Front Line GMS Business decision making.

Conduct risk assessments, and refresh previous assessments on a regular basis, including post implementation reviews. Understand inter-connectivity of risk across the Operational Risk framework.

Support GMS Front-line navigation of other operational risk established programs, such as Third Party and outsourcing requirement activities and Process Risk Self-assessment, in close collaboration with Control management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Fluent in Swedish and English, both spoken and written
- Experience in Compliance, Operational Risk or a related discipline, ideally in more than one of these disciplines.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills to work across a wide range of teams and build effective working relationships.
- Strong analytical skills
- Strong communicator, including articulation of risks/ problem statements, with experience of engaging with senior management.
- Desire to learn and continuously searching to understand industry best practices and find creative solutions
- Experience in business process improvement, control design and development of control and process testing.
- Proven ability to develop and enhance local control and compliance frameworks.
- In-depth knowledge of merchant acquiring or B2B financial services products and processes will be an advantage
- Ability to demonstrate experience of operating at both first and second line will be a strong advantage
