We are looking for a talented Mechanical Engineer to join our Brake engineering team, located in Troy, MI. This position will be onsite 3 days a week.
This professional will be focus on activities related to engineering projects, such as, designing brakes, work on sustaining activities tasks, support quality department on technical field questions and support, problem solving orientation, stablish product thinking and development of technical tasks at the product and cross-business integration level for current and future products within a given business unit or corporate area. This involves work across many steps in the product life cycle.

Job Summary:
This product focused position performs established technical tasks at the sub-system and/or component level for current and future products within a given business unit or corporate area. This involves work across many steps in the product life cycle. Because of the product centered nature of this position, they are very often a central point of coordination and decision making between product line engineers, customer teams, systems engineers, purchasing, suppliers and manufacturing.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform engineering analysis necessary for the mechanical and electromechanical product design, application and testing of various brake models, such as air and hydraulic wedge brakes, S-Cam brakes, air and hydraulic disc brakes and SAHR parking brakes for Specialty/Defense and Off-Highway areas.
- Collaborate on brake design, 3D modeling and 2D detail drawing, workflow process of releasing new products and usage of all necessary Engineering tools for design, such as, DFMEA, DFM/DFA, statistical analysis, test reports, design review and tech reviews and DVP&R (Design validation Plan and Report).
Coordinate and negotiate with brake lab activities including:
- Development, prioritization and follow up on tests.
- Track and manage test parts
- Research activities.
- Inspections on service parts or field returns investigation.
- Test reports creation.
- Collaborate with axle Engineering for brake application approvals.
- Collaborate in the development of documentation, including technical specifications, test reports, and design validation plans.
- Understand and apply best practices and contribute to improving them.
- Responsible for interacting with Business units to understand the Customer needs.
- Be compliant and understand Safety procedures to guarantee a safer environment to work.
- Ensure timely completion of all project objectives.
- Lead and support problem solving activities through structured problem solving such as 8D, KT, DFSS, DMAIC and/or Shainin.
- Contribute effectively toward team goals and work as a team member to ensure project completion.
RESPONSIBILITIES
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
- Engage Stakeholders: Obtain input from technical managers, project leaders, product and manufacturing engineers, and supplier partners to deliver information and recommendations that lead to quality product decisions.
- Apply Knowledge and Experience: Use your academic knowledge and existing experience to make decisions that progress projects forward without sacrificing quality. This includes handling day-to-day project details, analysis, test work instructions, and coordination across disciplines.
- Utilize and Improve Processes: Apply and improve processes such as Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, Failure Incident Review Group (FIRG), and tools like 7-step problem solving and design review checklists to support high-quality decision making.
- Lead Projects Independently: Provide independent leadership for smaller projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems, or services, managing ambiguity and maintaining full accountability to the project team.
- Execute Work Processes: Deliver independent execution of established and emerging work processes and systems while continuing to develop your technology or product knowledge.
- Develop and Improve Work Processes: Lead the development and improvement of work processes and systems within your functional discipline area at the business unit site.
- Coordinate and Direct Work: Coordinate and direct work among technicians and temporary student employees and assist in transferring knowledge to less experienced engineers through indirect influence or direct management of a small, local group.
- Provide Technical Support and Guidance: Offer support and guidance to influence technical direction within the project team and continue to develop proficiency in critical competency areas.
- Specialize in Your Discipline: Operate as a recognized specialist in a discipline or product area within your immediate team, providing expertise and leadership.
Education, Licenses, Certifications:
College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
Experience:
Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 5 years of full-time direct, practical experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering is preferred.
- Detailed design experience and knowledge in Commercial or Light vehicle brake systems.
- Able to work as a team player supporting cross-functional groups.
- Have a positive attitude, quick learner and a team player with diverse ideas and viewpoints.
- Excellent presentation skills, communication and proactive.
- Able to create models and drawings in PTC Creo, preferred.
- Programming using Python, C, C++ and utilizing software tools such as MathCad and Matlab/Simulink.
- Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing to major components – GD&T.
- Create DRBFM, DFMEA, FTA, DVP&R, and other supporting documents to meet required specifications such as ISO26262 and others
- Committed to learn and focused on accepting project tasks and challenges.
- Project management skills are required.
- Problem Solving certified (DFSS, DMAIC and/or Shainin), with demonstrated problem solving ability through the use of six sigma and/or Shainin projects.
- Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing methods. Casting, Forging, Machining, and Assembly methods.
- Provides support and guidance to influence technical direction within a project team and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.
