The Product Design Technician – Level II creates, modifies, and maintains product specifications, including 3D models and engineering drawings, in alignment with Cummins, industry, national, and international standards. This role contributes to product quality, configuration control, and overall engineering effectiveness while supporting cross-functional collaboration and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain high-quality 3D models and engineering drawings using CAD tools in accordance with Cummins standards.
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure accurate product definition and manufacturability.
  • Ensure compliance with company, industry, national, and international design standards.
  • Manage CAD data using PLM/PDM tools to support configuration control, data integrity, and security.
  • Process and execute internal engineering work requests in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineering, manufacturing, and quality.
  • Participate in drawing quality reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of design standards and practices.
  • Support product configuration and change management activities, including release, tracking, and documentation of engineering changes.
  • Contribute to maintaining design documentation and ensuring readiness for manufacturing and inspection.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Skills & Competencies

  • Mechanical Design Modeling & Analysis: Ability to create CAD models to support system-level analysis such as dimensional variation and finite element analysis.
  • Mechanical System Design: Working knowledge of mechanical systems to develop robust and reliable design solutions across product lifecycle stages.
  • Design Specification Development: Ability to produce detailed models, drawings, and BOMs that clearly communicate design intent.
  • Product Configuration & Change Management: Experience managing product data, revisions, and lifecycle changes using PLM/PDM systems.
  • Communication: Effectively conveys technical information across diverse audiences.
  • Decision Making: Makes timely, sound decisions in dynamic environments.
  • Execution Focus: Delivers consistent results under challenging conditions.
  • Collaboration & Trust: Builds strong working relationships with integrity and transparency.
  • Problem Solving: Navigates complex information to drive effective solutions.

Experience

  • Requires some relevant work experience with intermediate-level knowledge gained through education, training, or on-the-job experience.

Additional Qualifications (Preferred for Internal Candidates)

  • Strong understanding of Cummins engineering and drafting standards.
  • In-depth knowledge of engine business products and after-treatment systems.
  • Proficiency in Creo for 3D modeling and drafting.
  • Hands-on experience with PLM/PDM tools, preferably Windchill .
  • Solid understanding and application of GD&T principles.
  • Exposure to manufacturing processes; casting experience is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent in a relevant STEM field is required.
  • An Associate’s Degree (2-year) or regionally applicable certification in engineering/design or related field is preferred.
  • May require compliance with export control or sanctions regulations.
