Job Details

We’re seeking someone to join our Valuation Control team as a Senior Investments Specialist.

The role sits within the Valuation Control Investments team, which provides independent oversight of fund and fund asset valuations across private markets on behalf of both the Firm and the Fund’s LP investors. The team works very closely with the asset management deal teams who manage the investments, finance, risk and senior stakeholders in the Firm to assess valuation outputs, challenge assumptions, and ensure valuations are robust, well-supported and aligned with the relevant valuation framework. This is a control and governance role, with exposure to interesting assets, and fluctuating market dynamics that require complex judgement calls and communication with a broad range of internal stakeholders. The team also deals with external auditors to provide rationale and comfort over the concluded valuations. Overall, the role offers the chance to meaningfully add value to the valuation review process at all levels of seniority, access to many individuals across different divisions at the firm globally, and a path for continued career progression whilst gaining access to the ever-evolving private market landscape.

Since 1935, Morgan Stanley is known as a global leader in financial services, always evolving and innovating to better serve our clients and our communities in more than 40 countries around the world.

What you’ll do in the role:

In this role, you will take ownership of valuation review activity across the real estate fund portfolio and help ensure the Firm’s valuations remain well-supported, transparent and consistent with internal policies and market conditions. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead Valuation Reviews: Review real estate fund and fund asset valuations, identify key valuation drivers and present findings and recommendations to senior management.

  • Analyse and Understand: Develop a strong understanding of underlying real estate holdings, valuation methodologies and market movements to assess whether valuations are appropriate and in line with internal valuation frameworks and applicable accounting standards.

  • Assess Market Conditions: Monitor relevant market developments and asses their impact on valuation inputs, real estate portfolios and wider firm positions.

  • Collaborate and Challenge: Work closely with asset management deal teams and other stakeholders across the Finance and Risk divisions, to discuss valuation assumptions, resolve complex issues and ensure consistency in approach and application.

  • Deliver Ad-Hoc Analysis: Work on a range of project-based tasks relating to real estate portfolios, valuation issues, management reporting and broader private investments initiatives, often in response to recent market events that are high focus and topical.

  • Drive Progress: Contribute to the ongoing development and refinement of valuation approaches, governance processes and control frameworks across private investments.

What you’ll bring to the role:

We are looking for someone with a strong technical foundation, commercial awareness and the confidence to work with valuation judgements in a control environment. The ideal candidate will be able to combine financial analysis with sound judgement and clear communication:

  • Experience: Experience or a strong interest in applying or reviewing valuation methodologies, such as Discounted Cash Flow (DCF), income capitalisation, market-based approaches in the context of illiquid assets or private markets, ideally within real estate, infrastructure or private equity. Exposure to real estate valuation concepts (e.g. NOI, cap rates, yield analysis, development appraisals) is highly desirable, as well as a general interest in private markets.

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of financial statements, valuation principles and the fundamentals of fair value. Good analytical skills and the ability to interpret financial and non-financial information to form a balanced view. Strong attention to detail, with the ability to spot inconsistencies and identify risks. Due to the subjective nature of the valuations and fundamental analysis required, good organisational skills are required to deliver valuation reviews on time.

  • Personal Qualities: Curious, determined to understand what is driving changes in valuations, and how macroeconomic events should be reflected in updated valuations, so as to be commercially aware and able to operate in a fast-moving environment. Strong communication skills and the confidence to engage with a range of stakeholders, including Portfolio Managers, Finance teams and senior management, and challenge appropriately.

  • Tools: Strong Excel skills along with experience with PowerPoint and the ability to present analysis clearly and professionally.

  • Education: Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Mathematics, Business or a related discipline. Professional qualifications such as CFA, ACCA or equivalent would be beneficial but not essential.
