Tax Department
Tax Department reports to the Chief Financial Officer and consists of experienced professionals located across the globe. The department is responsible for global tax compliance, tax accounting, business unit tax advisory and tax planning for the Firm.
Job Description
The professional will handle Japanese tax matters for Morgan Stanley’s affiliates in Japan. The role requires strong technical expertise in Japanese tax and accounting, sound professional judgement, and the ability to act as a trusted professional to internal stakeholders across the regions. The position also involves extensive interactions with tax authorities, external auditors, accounting firms and law firms.
Core Responsibilities
- Handle Japanese tax compliance, including preparation and review of tax provisions and tax returns for Morgan Stanley’s affiliates in Japan.
- Manage tax audits and inquiries from Japanese tax authorities, including strategy, communication and resolution.
- Provide tax support and advice to business units on Japan-related business initiatives and transactions.
- Support the design, development and implementation of tax and capital planning initiatives in Japan in coordination with the US, Asia-Pacific and other regions.
- Proactively identify, assess and manage Japanese tax risks, regulatory developments and control issues.
- Coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors, ensuring high-quality delivery and appropriate oversight.
Skills Required
- Accountable self-starter with resilience, flexibility and willingness to challenge the status quo constructively.
- Strong analytical, communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Japanese CPA or Certified Tax Accountant
- 5-8 years of experience in Japanese tax at Big 4 accounting firms and/or in-house tax department at multinational corporations
- Solid technical knowledge in Japanese tax and accounting
- Strong interest in, and ability to work effectively within, the financial services industry
- Language skills: Japanese (native level), English (business level)
