Deputy Group Leader, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)

Dr. Sara Del Valle is a scientist and a Deputy Group Leader for the Information Systems & Modeling Group (A-1) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). As a scientist, she leads an multidisciplinary team focused on detecting, understanding, and forecasting infectious diseases using heterogeneous data streams and mathematical, computational, and statistical models. Most recently, her team has been investigating the role of large-scale data analytics such as satellite imagery, Internet data, and climate on complementing traditional approaches to inform infectious disease modeling and political instability. Her work has led to new insights on how human behavior affects disease transmission, better understanding on the role of mixing patters on disease spread, the role of social media to inform nowcasting and forecasting models, and pioneered modeling approaches to forecast infectious diseases in real-time.

She has developed models for many diseases including smallpox, anthrax, influenza, malaria, HIV, hepatitis C, pertussis, MERS-CoV, zika, chikungunya, dengue, Ebola, and most recently COVID-19. She has served on several LANL, National, and international advisory and scientific committees, and has published over fifty peer-reviewed manuscripts and articles.
