Would you like to join Deloitte's Tax Controversy Services (TCS) team in our Washington National Tax (WNT) practice, helping drive both our national tax strategy and potentially federal tax legislation? Work you'll do As a Manager in our TCS practice, you will advise clients on IRS procedural and controversy issues and assist clients with all aspects of IRS audits and appeals.

The team

Deloitte Tax's WNT professionals offer unique insight into the many factors affecting taxation, from the tax policies that drive federal tax legislation, to understanding the technical nuances that may create compliance exposure. Professionals in the WNT practice are a select group of specialists whose knowledge, skills, and experience are integral to understanding technical issues. Deloitte Tax's WNT professionals work closely with the local office tax professionals and clients to evaluate complicated issues and help manage risk in today's increasingly sophisticated business world.

The Tax Controversy team can assist clients with IRS interactions during the tax examination life cycle, from pre-filing through post-appeals, as well as return processing, account analysis, and interest computation. Our Tax Controversy specialists are highly experienced in IRS policies, procedures, and examination approaches. The team includes former IRS officials, industry tax executives, and former government litigators.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Research, address, and consult on technical issues specific to IRS practice and procedural issues including tax, penalty and interest assessments, statutes of limitation for refunds and assessments, missed elections, and IRS examination and IRS appeals matters.
  • Prepare written communications to the IRS regarding penalty abatement requests.
  • Assist on IRS account issues, corrections and reconciliations.
  • Work with other WNT groups on IRS practice and procedural issues that affect other technical matters such as corporate taxation, partnerships, international tax, mergers and acquisitions and due diligence matters.
  • Represent clients at various levels of IRS controversy, including examination and appeals.
  • Develop and present training materials and other information to educate Deloitte Tax professionals on IRS practice and procedure issues
  • Develop and participate in internal and external webcasts.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Ability to perform job responsibilities within a hybrid work model that requires US Tax professionals to co-locate in person 2 - 3 days per week
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • Limited immigration sponsorship may be available
  • At least 5+ years of tax experience, preferably representing clients in federal tax controversies or representing the government in federal tax matters
  • One of the following active accreditations obtained:
    • Licensed CPA in state of practice/primary office if eligible to sit for the CPA exam
    • If not CPA eligible
      • Licensed attorney
      • Enrolled agent
      • Certifications
        • Certified Financial Accountant (CFA)
        • Certified Financial Planner (CFP)
  • Ability to travel up to 10%, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve

Preferred:
  • An advanced degree such as MS in Taxation, JD and/or LLM
  • Strong analytical abilities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

For individuals assigned and/or hired to work in Washington, DC, Deloitte is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This compensation range is specific to Washington, DC, and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. At Deloitte, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $146,510 to $272,090.

You may also be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance.
