Principal UX Product Designer

Role Summary

Are you a curious, smart strategic, self-driven UX professional designer and leader who loves the challenge of turning complex problems and constraints into elegant solutions that meet customer needs? Come and join us as we drive our AI product transformation across Thomson Reuters. We are looking for a principal designer who leads by doing and loves solving problems at scale. We aren't just changing the way customers engage with us, we are transforming and re-imagining our business. Our work focuses on a large portfolio of transformational efforts as we work together to deliver on the promise of making it easy to do business with Thomson Reuters. Our customers range from small entrepreneurs to large corporations and government clients across the globe.

As a Principal UX Product Designer, you will be responsible for driving and implementing AI design strategy across our most complex applications and problem spaces by partnering with design teams, product stakeholders, and senior leadership. You will work at the intersection of user experience, product strategy, and applied AI, translating complex model capabilities into intuitive, trustworthy, and high-impact workflows. Throughout the product lifecycle you will work collaboratively across design, engineering, product management, data science, and senior leadership. While delivering bar-raising experiences, you inherently look for ways to make complex experiences feel easy and intuitive, ensuring our customers are empowered to confidently move seamlessly between tasks. You comfortably make—and defend—decisions while creating user-centered online experiences in an agile environment.

About the Role

In this role as Principal UX Product Designer, you will:

Strategic Design Leadership

  • Lead the end-to-end design of AI-powered features across multiple product lines, including agentic workflows, generative interactions, and human-in-the-loop systems
  • Define and evangelize UX strategy across complex problem spaces, setting design direction that influences product roadmaps and strategic priorities
  • Serve as a thought leader in the design of useful, usable, and desirable AI-powered products in a team environment
  • Chart a course for yourself and others in ambiguous situations, leading strategic thinking across teams and mentoring designers
  • Contribute to and shape internal design standards for AI patterns, prompt design guidelines, evaluation criteria, and UX quality benchmarks

AI & Innovation

  • Translate model behaviors, data inputs, and system limitations into coherent UX patterns that drive user trust and product adoption at scale
  • Prototype with real AI/LLM models to evaluate user prompts, improve model responses, and inform product direction
  • Map and design collaboration patterns between users and AI—defining when AI acts autonomously, when humans take control, and how handoffs occur
  • Create clear interaction flows that incorporate transparency moments, safety guardrails, override options, and recovery states
  • Partner with data science and engineering to shape model requirements, evaluate performance constraints, and align system behaviors with user needs
  • Champion responsible AI principles including transparency, fairness, bias mitigation, and user empowerment across all design work

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Influence

  • Collaborate and work cross-functionally with design, program, engineering, data science, and product teams from design concept to design solution, setting UX guidelines and creating assets to ensure bar-raising quality all the way to market
  • Present your solutions to design, product, engineering, and senior leadership. Synthesize and manage feedback to incorporate changes appropriately, and iterate the vision and design accordingly
  • Communicate design decisions with clarity, influence senior stakeholders, and guide teams through ambiguous or evolving problem spaces
  • Work strategically with executives and team members across the organization to drive alignment on complex, cross-organizational initiatives

User-Centered Design & Research

  • Develop use cases and high-level requirements while defining UX strategy and creating user-centered designs utilizing customer feedback, market analysis, and usability findings
  • Partner with UX Research to run usability testing and AI-specific validation studies to understand user mental models, trust factors, and interaction expectations
  • Leverage qualitative and quantitative data to run evaluative studies for AI features (e.g., prompt/response quality, hallucination risk, trust signals)
  • Continually iterate and evolve the way we design and learn from our customers
  • Demonstrate deep systems-thinking skills and comfort designing across multiple layers: UI, data inputs, model constraints, and operational workflows

Mentorship & Design Excellence

  • Mentor and coach designers across the organization, elevating design craft and strategic thinking
  • Model best practices in design process, critique, and collaboration
  • Identify opportunities to improve design operations, tools, and processes that benefit the broader design organization
  • Leverage AI tooling and internal content standards to deliver clear, concise, brand-aligned product experiences
  • Design accessible solutions and collaborate with the Accessibility team to ensure WCAG compliance, using AI checks alongside expert review

  • Strong portfolio of work that illustrates your process, your level of craft, and the measurable results you have driven, with demonstrated end-to-end ownership of complex workflows
  • Deep understanding of model behaviors and limitations—hallucinations, confidence levels, deterministic vs. probabilistic output, and data quality impacts
  • Experience working across teams to synthesize feedback and input from product management, engineering, data science, and marketing
  • Strong interaction design skills with the ability to simplify ambiguous AI behaviors into predictable, user-centered experiences
  • Ability to prototype using tools such as Figma, Python notebooks, model sandboxes, or no-code AI orchestration tools

  • Experience reducing product silos by delivering interconnected solutions that improve customer experience across multiple products
  • Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to implement designs in complex organizational environments
  • Experience envisioning and delivering solutions for large-scope projects filled with complexity that often cross organizational boundaries
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in design, human-computer interaction (HCI), or equivalent
  • Demonstrated history of acquiring user data through conducting usability studies, performing user research, and synthesizing analytics
  • Ability to design intuitive search, drafting, and review workflows—especially those involving complex knowledge structures or trust-critical decision moments
  • Comfort working with model-evaluation tooling, analytics dashboards, and prompt or version-management systems to understand and refine AI behavior
  • Strength in shaping information architecture for large-scale content ecosystems, including clear citation patterns, confidence signals, and quality indicators
  • Familiarity with domain-heavy environments—such as tax and accounting, legal research, compliance, risk and fraud, or financial analysis—and the ability to translate complexity into usable experiences
  • Experience shipping zero-to-one products, iterating rapidly through ambiguity to test hypotheses, derisk bets, and accelerate product-market fit
  • Track record of mentoring designers and elevating design practice across organizations
