Job Details

The San Francisco Chronicle has an immediate opening for an editor to lead data visualization as part of our data team.

Data visualization is a key part of the Chronicle’s journalism. From climate coverage to public safety, charts, maps, and data interactives are central to how we provide utility to the readers and communities we serve. As our first data visualization editor, we will look to you to elevate our graphics work to the next level.

The data visualization editor will manage several data visualization reporters already on staff, and have the option to work on their own stories as well. They will work closely with the Chronicle’s design team (which specializes in visual storytelling) and the Hearst Devhub (a centralized group of developers and engineers that manages a shared codebase, creates templates, and works on stories).

The data visualization editor should be an experienced journalist with strong graphics-focused, front-end web development skills. They must have an interest in managing and developing people, as well as a proven track record in story development and collaboration. Strong data manipulation and analysis skills are also necessary to succeed in this position.

Above all, we are looking for someone who cares about offering readers exciting data visualizations and graphics that delight and inform readers. To be successful in this role, you will need to be a self-starter who works quickly, is comfortable providing and taking feedback, is committed to inclusive journalism, and wants to own the stories that matter most.

Candidates must be willing to relocate to San Francisco to work in a hybrid workplace, where employees are expected to be in the office three days a week. The data visualization editor will report to data editor Dan Kopf.
