Job Details

We’re looking for an audience producer to help the Houston Chronicle reach new and established audiences on the weekend, with strong journalism across all platforms, including the homepage, our app, newsletters, social and through push notifications. 

You will work with newsroom leadership and weekend editors and reporters to create and execute content plans. We need a self-starter with high standards who can collaborate well, has excellent communication skills, is comfortable providing and taking feedback and thrives in a fast-paced, breaking-news-driven environment. 

The Responsibilities

  • Help weekend editors and reporters identify trending content for story generation on the weekends
  • Take a lead role in coordinating breaking news coverage on the weekend, working collaboratively with weekend editor and reporters to ensure content is produced and optimized for all channels including search, social and email
  • Program the Houston Chronicle homepage and section pages with the proper content, balancing sharp news judgment and writing skills against real-time analytics
  • Arrange assets with an eye for detail on article pages, including adding related items, choosing photo placement and building freeforms for video and interactive content.
  • Create posts for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media channels for content produced on the weekend
  • This role requires a four day work week, with 10 hour shifts from Friday through Monday.

What will it take to be successful?

  • 1-3 years newsroom experience
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree, journalism focus preferred
  • Proven ability to curate a homepage with strong news judgment that prioritizes subscriber engagement
  • Understanding of web metrics and analytics tools to measure audience behavior
  • Skilled at writing social and newsletter copy
  • Great headline writer that can take into account SEO and social media.
  • Ability to organize time, troubleshoot technical problems, balance audience and journalistic mandates, and make quick decisions with sound editorial judgment
  • Emotional intelligence, collaborative mindset, strong interpersonal skills and grace under pressure
  • Comfort with constantly evolving technology, and ability to adapt quickly and bring others along
