About the job

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

The Android Indoor Location team builds maps of the world in terms of what phones can sense, then uses those maps to serve billions of daily users, providing indoor locations to all android apps and Google teams, and saving lives through Android Emergency Location Services.

We use Google's and Android's infrastructure and robotics techniques to maintain and improve the world's most advanced crowdsourced mapping system. We aim to revolutionize indoor location capabilities, enabling indoor navigation experiences and ensuring that emergency responders can locate a distressed 911 caller immediately.

Android devices rely on WiFi to localize while indoors. When WiFi isn't available, no accurate location can be determined, even in critical use cases. To remedy this, this project investigates the use of additional RF signals for indoor localization.

  • Build and launch these solutions, spanning firmware, embedded code (including Android), as well as server-side crowdsourcing systems.
  • Initiate and maintain the collaborations with partner teams and the ecosystem necessary for these launches.
  • Build the software and assemble the hardware tooling necessary for the above investigations and launches.
