Minimum qualifications:
  • JD, LL.B., equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7 years of experience at attorney-level in government, in-house, or at a law firm.
  • Experience in commercial negotiations, digital music licensing agreements, and with negotiations and support of multi-territorial licensing entities.
  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g. have registered in-house status) in at least one country in the region in which the position is located.
  • Ability to communicate in English fluently in order to negotiate, draft, and analyze licensing agreements.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with international consumer and data protection laws.
  • Experience with industry level initiatives in relation to music and copyright.
  • Ability to communicate in a local Asian language fluently (e.g. Japanese, Korean, Bahasa Indonesia, Hindi, or Mandarin) to negotiate with key regional partners.

As Music Counsel, you will focus on cutting edge music licensing, policy development, content-creation and distribution, and related transactions for Google products, particularly YouTube and YouTube Music in APAC.

Responsibilities
  • Discuss, draft, and review multi-territorial music and video content licensing agreements with record labels, music publishers, and collecting societies primarily for YouTube.
  • Respond promptly to legal requests from business development, sales, licensing, marketing, and other business areas.
  • Advise business development, finance, and other company departments on legal issues and risks, complex agreement structures, approval processes, company policies and procedures, and intellectual property, together with advising on overall strategic positioning.
  • Work with internal and external legal counsel on specific matters ranging from regulatory issues to expert advice requests.
  • Support continuous improvement of standard form agreements and legal processes.
