The Materials Engineer will advance additive manufactured materials technology with a focus on heat exchangers.  Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, is an emerging technology that enables innovative designs and approaches to thermal management solutions for engine and airframe applications.  The materials and complex geometries are not yet well defined, so a significant effort is required to fully characterize the material to understand its strength and other properties. 

The Materials Engineer analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems. Performs material analyses that include, but are not limited to, failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications. Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes. May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.

What You Will Do

• Material characterization and optimization for strength and operating environment
• Conducts research to develop new and improved additive manufacturing processes
• Conducts or supervises tests on raw materials or finished products to ensure their quality
• Designs and directs the testing or control of processing procedures, and designs processing plants and equipment to optimize the chemical and materials engineering processes
• Determines appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materials to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design
• Provides technical leadership and assists in training less experienced engineers, when required, to help them diagnose and solve problems and enhance their capabilities
• Creates and implements common procedures and standard work across the organization to optimize efficiency and quality
• Works with a team structure to assure that defined requirements and milestones are met, and significant risks are identified and mitigated
• Develop and present detailed presentations of engineering design reviews, as well as internal program management and customer reviews

Qualifications You Must Have

• Typically requires a University Degree and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience 
• U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required

The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
