Senior Engineering Manager – Avionics Hardware (Computer Hardware 2) 

 

Collins Aerospace is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead a team of electrical design engineers and project engineers focused on complex product development for ruggedized electronics solutions used in many equipment types across the Collins Avionics business portfolio. The designs include elements of processing, graphics, video, ethernet, and IO for mission computer and displays products. This equipment is used on a diverse range of aircraft platforms from Military Fixed Wing, Military and Commercial Rotary Wing, Commercial Air Transport, and Business and Regional aircraft. 

  

The team has responsibilities for the full product life-cycle activities from road-mapping and conceptual design to sustainment support of in-production solutions. This team works closely with product development groups that specialize in mechanical design, platform (product) software, and systems engineering.   

  

Candidates must have strong technical, organizational, and leadership skills as well as a good project management understanding to enable predictable execution by the team. They will be responsible for performance management, talent acquisition, and career development for a geographically distributed team in order to position the team for strong performance now and into the future. The candidate should show the ability to motivate and empower a team through passion and enthusiasm. An individual in this role will interface with technical and non-technical personnel across many business areas within Collins Aerospace as well as external customers requiring excellent written and verbal communication skills.  

  

What You Will Do:

  • Responsible for the success of the team in meeting program milestones and activities 
  • Responsible for adherence to existing budgets, schedules, work plans, and performance requirements, along with planning and budgeting of new efforts 
  • Responsible for building and refining technical roadmaps that support the variety of needs from different product and business markets 
  • Responsible for developing team staffing plans to meet a wide variety of technical projects 
  • Actively participates in team’s technical activities in order to coach and influence the team 
  • Actively evaluates individual employee performance and career development needs 
  • Oversees and participates in the development of engineering bids to ensure success 
  • Responsible for continually growing team capabilities through career development and onboarding of new hires. 
  • Occasional domestic travel (<10%) 
  • Lead the design effort for circuitry (Digital, Analog, and Power) for design of the System architecture. These designs will be to Aerospace standard including but not limited to DO-160 and DO-254 
  • Integrate hardware and software for embedded microprocessor devices and firmware based FPGA devices. 
  • Assist in the design and development of embedded systems circuitry and printed circuit assemblies according to IPC standards. 
  • Generate design documentation including requirements specifications, design details, test procedures and reports. 
  • Prepare and review the drawings and layouts for production parts, components, and test equipment. 
  • Create, document and test software and hardware to validate design details 
  • Provide oversight and leadership to their direct reports including professional development, resource planning, coaching, and additional future recruiting 
  • Communicate status and progress across levels of management within the organization, as well as customer communication as necessary 

 

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Security Clearance 
  • Must have experience with performing bid and pursuit efforts 
  • Must be able to demonstrate experience in leading a team 

  

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Experience leading teams in a formal engineering manager role 
  • Familiarity with avionics hardware product design and development life cycle activities including requirement capture, detailed design, integration, and qualification (MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461, DO-160)
  • Expert circuit designer with product design experience in both analog and digital circuits. 
  • Experience in analysis and schematic layout software packages 
  • Familiarity with  an industry standard electrical analysis 
  • Evaluate concepts by creating analytical models and provide direction on which concept will meet component and or system level performance. 
  • Interact cross-functionally with a wide variety of people and teams. Work closely with engineers to identify opportunities for design improvements. 
  • Experience with developing proposals and cost estimates for new business 
  • Make business recommendations (e.g. cost-benefit, forecasting) with effective presentations of findings at multiple levels of stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrable critical thinking and analytical skills, including the ability and confidence to make conclusions and recommendations from data 
  • Work with a team of engineers to design, develop, test and document electrical components. 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously 
  • Proven project management experience including budgets, schedules, resources, and risk management 
  • Working knowledge of DO-160 and DO-254

The salary range for this role is 118,000 USD - 246,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
