Senior Engineering Manager - Chemistry & Materials Engineering / Propulsion (Onsite)

Position Overview:

This position is a manager for the Chemistry and Material Engineering team in Mission Systems Ejection & Propulsion department.  This manager is primarily responsible for directing and coordinating the work of a team consisting of Chemists, Material Engineers, and Laboratory Technicians. The team is involved with multiple technical support functions across the site, including nearly all aspects of Operations, as well as Safety, Quality, and Value Stream Management.  In addition, this manager will support department activities to improve efficiency, ensure predictable execution, and keep the talented staff engaged.

What You Will Do:

  • Direct management of engineering team including hiring, career development and mentoring
  • Check work status and assure that the functions that the team supports are advised of the progress
  • Responsible for capturing lessons learned and implementing corrective actions
  • Oversee the department laboratories and assure that quality and safety standards are maintained
  • Oversee and approve department procurement, which involves laboratory expendables and new and replacement equipment
  • Maintain a strategic plan for maintaining the capability to respond to changing demands for support from the functions supported by the department:
    • Understand skills that will be required
    • Maintain skills redundancy and plan for succession
    • Track equipment requirements for maintenance and replacement
    • Maintain agility of the department processes
    • Participate in the updates to the technical road map
  • Assign and guide team members in routinely supporting Quality Assurance, Supply Chain, the Propellant Plant, Powder Processing, the Obsolescence Team, Program Management, Safety, as well as the other departments within Engineering
  • Oversight of all procedures and processes being adhered to by the team
  • Implement best practices and improve efficiency
  • Review reports, drawings, and other documentation
  • Lead by example with personal work ethics, which result in programs being completed within stated budgets and schedules, with a primary emphasis on safety.
  • Support Process Hazard Analysis and Process Failure Mode and Effect sessions for operations involving energetic materials, and those processes involving the department laboratories in particular. 

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws / regulations OR Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years’ experience OR In absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience is required

  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • A general understanding of the technical aspects of chemistry and material engineering
  • Ability to communicate the work that the department is performing at a high (i.e. less technical) level
  • Able to support Process Hazard Analysis and Process Failure Mode and Effect sessions for operations involving energetic materials 
  • Communication skills (verbal as well as written), technical competence, leadership and planning skills are important to effective performance
  • Knowledge of cost account management

Working Conditions – Physical requirements and environment:
  • Office environment.
  • Chemical laboratory – primarily supervisory, but may involve hands-on work with materials, including energetics.
  • Manufacturing and test areas – primarily observing energetic operations and discussing issues with operators.
  • Occasional off-site travel
  • Managers are currently 100% on site

The salary range for this role is 130,000 USD - 272,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Specific benefits are dependent upon the specific business unit as well as whether or not the position is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
