Northrop Grumman Aeronautic Systems has an opening for a Principal Materials and Processes Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our South Bay Vehicle Engineering organization. This role will be located in El Segundo, California.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform root cause analysis of material failures from various aircrafts.
- Perform various tests for large material qualification campaigns.
- Quality control testing of various materials.
- Responsible for priorities, bids, budget and customer schedule for this section of the lab.
- Communicate clearly and frequently with team members, customers and applicable stakeholders to ensure customer requirements are met
- Regularly interacting and communicating with Program and Functional management for status & visibility
- Some regional travel may be required while supporting a variety of NGAS programs.
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years industry experience
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Materials Science/Engineering or related field.
- Experience with Optical Microscopy and SEM/EDX
- Experience with various Thermal Analysis test methods (Thermogravimetric analysis TGA, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis DMA, Differential scanning calorimetry DSC, Thermomechanical Analysis TMA)
- Experience with Wet Chemistry and proper handling of hazardous materials.
- Basic knowledge of metal alloys and composite materials, analyzing characteristics such as microstructure, flaws, cracks and inclusions.
- Basic knowledge of different failure modes and fracture mechanisms.
- Ability to perform fractography and material characterization
- Familiarity with basic metallurgy testing and principles.
- Background in Material/Metals Failure Analysis
- A current active in-scope U.S. Government DoD Secret Security Clearance is required to start with the ability to obtain and maintain Special Program Access (PAR/SPA).
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years industry experience
- Familiar with mounting and polish techniques for various materials.
- Familiar with hardness testing (Rockwell Hardness)
- Knowledge of properties of metal alloys and additive manufactured metal alloys.
- Knowledge in organic and inorganic coating materials (such as conversion coatings, anodize coatings, plating, paint, and sealants) is a plus
- Knowledge of measuring of physical properties such as composite resin weight and fiber volume using acid digestion and heated burn-off methodology.
- Ability to identify corrosion and investigate the cause.
- Knowledge of non-destructive inspection techniques.
- Experience with viscosity testing (rheometer).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate in a team environment
- Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and/or accomplish them simultaneously
- Ability to comprehend and analyze complex problems and develop solutions
- Experience with military specs and standards
- Experience with project management
Salary Range: $97,500 - $146,300
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
