We are currently seeking an Firmware Manger with extensive design experience to join our team within Collins Aerospace Electronic Controls and Motor Systems, Solihull.

We have the extensive capabilities, comprehensive portfolio, and broad expertise to solve customers’ toughest challenges and to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global market for aircraft electric propulsion systems. 

Recently, the site at Solihull has developed the worlds first 1MW Motor and Control system for use in hybrid-electric aircraft propulsion. We pride ourselves on our pro-active approach to inclusivity, supporting diversity and being family orientated.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an Firmware Manager with extensive Firmware / FPGA Experience and with prior relevant leadership experience to join our Firmware team. The role requires a good fundamental understanding of FPGA design and proven experience of leading a small team of engineers to own and deliver complex work packages from conception through to final product.

You can expect to work in a collaborative team, giving complex specialist support to the design and development of high-performance world-class motor drive systems.

Essential Skills and Experience: 

  • Degree or equivalent in electronics engineering
  • with FPGA tools & technologies (e.g., Microchip, Xilinx, SoC, Modelsim, Matlab, Simulink)
  • Demonstrable practical experience of FPGA design and verification (VHDL) including requirements capture, simulation, code coverage, synthesis, place & route, and timing analysis & closure.
  • Configuration management experience of large complex FPGA designs.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with other engineering disciplines.
  • Proven track record in delivering and leading multiple concurrent complex work packages.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to co-ordinate a team of people for design and verification.
  • Provide team leadership (taking a hands-on approach) in design, development, prototyping, verification, and delivery of DO254 compliant FPGAs
  • Develop a high-performance engineering team, drive goal setting, coaching, monitoring, training and manage career development
  • Guide the team to embrace an innovative approach to problem solving, design implementation, process development and quality

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Manager, team lead or Principal firmware engineer with 5+ years FPGA/ASIC experience
  • An understanding of Agile methodologies (particularly SCRUM & Kanban).
  • An understanding of Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) and SysML.
  • An understanding of communication protocols, DSP or VLSI maths functions.
  • Experience of System on Chip (SoC) design targeting FPGA or ASIC.
  • Experience of applying control laws within FPGA applications.
  • Knowledge of motor control systems, sensing components (e.g., LVDT, Resolvers).
  • Experience with military or aerospace designs compliant to RTCA/DO-254.
