The Role

As a Naval Architect you will work alongside the other Engineering Authorities to liaise with our stakeholders, conduct engineering assessments, review and support the approval of Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs). Demonstrating advanced technical theories, methodologies, principles and expertise to provide innovative solutions to the current phase of the project, you will be alert to cost and schedule constraints.

Your new role will also provide you with the opportunity to learn, share knowledge and be mentored on Engineering methodology and processes. Enabled by the support of the Engineering Manager, you will also be enrolled in our national Engineering network. Working in a friendly team to meet the needs of our customer - the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), your role involves direct engagement with peers, Australian Defence Force personnel, capability partners, sub-contractors and suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

  • As the technical interface between the customer, management and the implementation team, conduct systems analysis to derive function, performance and interface requirements to meet electrical safety parameters.
  • Provide engineering support for sustainment of the Patrol and Hydrographic ships during maintenance activities and in-service defects.
  • Review of engineering documentation such as docking calculations, stability calculations, structural calculations, work instructions, defect assessments, repair procedures, test procedures and engineering reports.
  • Engage with System Design activities (including trade studies) to ensure that the design artefacts are compatible with the baselined product; consistent across all subsystems, delivering system design to meet performance requirements.
  • Develop work scope and risk assessments for in-service defects, trials, emerging maintenance and reliability issues requiring knowledge of engineering fundamentals and the relevant class society requirements.
  • Produce safety and technical risk assessments in accordance with the Defence Seaworthiness Management System.
  • Key areas of knowledge include ship design, trim and stability, shock and vibration, dockings, hydrostatics and general structural engineering.
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholder; securing Raytheon Australia's reputation as a trusted partner in delivering systems integration and mission support solutions to our customers.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Tertiary Qualification in Naval Architecture or similar holding as a minimum and professional development sufficient to attain recognition as CPEng with Engineers Australia in a relevant engineering stream, including ability to attain RPEQ recognition.
  • Experience conducting Naval Architecture analysis within a heavy engineering, shipbuilding or defence industry including involvement in one or more of the following Engineering practices - Requirements Definition, Management, Analysis, Design and Verification and Validation.
  • Experience in effectively representing Engineering professional services to both internal and external customers.
  • Minimum 5 years of prior relevant experience (when a University Degree is held).
  • Practical to substantial knowledge of projects, programs, or systems relevant to the business with the ability to make enhancements and leverage knowledge in daily work.
  • Experience in product configuration control.
  • This position may require availability to travel when required.
