Summary:   This is a fully remote position within The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Information Resource Center (IRC); the individual in this role will work among a team of Information Specialists. 

 

Information Specialists are highly trained oncology professionals, such as social workers and nurses.  They provide personalized blood cancer education, patient advocacy and psychosocial support, to a diverse demographic of pediatric and adult blood cancer patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals from diagnosis through survivorship.  In addition, Bilingual Spanish Information Specialists will provide services and support in both Spanish and English.  They will be available for consultations to assist English only speaking colleagues with complicated Spanish-speaking cases needing appropriate resource guidance.

 

Information Specialists empower and equip patients and caregivers to effectively 

communicate with their healthcare team and promote patient self-advocacy, as well as provide clinical trial education and awareness and refer to the LLS Clinical Trial Support Center (CTSC) when appropriate. 

 

Information Specialists work collaboratively with their IRC colleagues, internal LLS departments, and external organizations to reduce barriers to care and improve the quality of life of blood cancer patients and their families. 

 

While employees may be permitted to work remotely, travel to the assigned office, HUB or Satellite Offices may be required as determined by the employee’s manager and the employee’s People Organization Generalist.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Respond to phone and electronic inquiries from patients and caregivers affected by blood cancer.
  • Provide accurate and up-to-date information on blood cancers including diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and clinical trials using established procedures and psychoeducational approaches.                                                                                 
  • Provide blood cancer patients and caregivers referrals to needed financial and psycho-social/ support resources that are available from LLS and other local and national organizations.
  • Provide clinical trial education and assist patients and caregivers in overcoming barriers to accessing clinical trials; refer patients and caregivers to LLS’s Clinical Trial Support Center (CTSC) as appropriate.                                                                                                 
  • Keep current on developments and trends related to diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, barriers to equitable access to care, coping and mental health resources.
  • Stay current on blood cancer research by reading peer-reviewed literature, materials from professional organizations, and attending professional symposia/conferences/webcasts, both within LLS and through other organizations.                                                     
  • Conduct thorough and accurate internet searches to identify specific disease, treatment, and resource information for patients.
  • Schedule and conduct follow-up calls with patients and caregivers as requested and/or needed to provide further navigation towards access to care or services.             
  • Complete an electronic record documenting each interaction, specifically capturing the demographics of the individual receiving assistance and delineating all details of each inquiry, including action taken and information/resources provided.  Provide consultation to LLS national and regional staff on blood cancer diagnoses and treatments as requested.
  • Represent the IRC/LLS at professional meetings, conferences, advisory boards, and in partnership initiatives and as requested, both by phone/video and in person. Bilingual-Spanish Information Specialists will also represent the IRC and collaborate with other LLS departments for our Spanish language outreach initiatives and projects.
  • Collaborate on the submission of abstracts to professional organizations for presentations, if requested.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience, Qualifications: 

  • Bilingual in Spanish- both speaking and writing
  • Master's in social work, master's in health education, Nursing degree (BSN or RN), or Masters in another related field. Need to be currently licensed in discipline. 
  • Three years of previous experience in a health care delivery setting, preferably focused on cancer care delivery, working with patients and their families.
  • Previous oncology experience, particularly hematology, is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to mitigate one’s own stress in emotionally difficult circumstances and assist patients and caregivers with compassion and empathy. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in Spanish and English

  • Must have a quiet space for office set up that is also private to ensure confidentiality when speaking to callers by phone.

We are excited to share the base pay range for this position is $74,000 to $81,000. The offered compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiencies, skills, education, and experience. Additionally, at LLS we place a high value on internal pay equity and will consider the current compensation of similarly situated roles and direct team members. Base compensation is only one component of our Total Rewards program, which also includes an annual incentive plan and a competitive benefits package.
