Collins Aerospace is seeking a seasoned Principal Chemical and Materials Engineering professional within the Applied Research & Technology organization of Enterprise Engineering.
This role designs surface engineering solutions, develops processes and common procedures, conducts tests on raw materials, and support production, including performing failure analysis.
This on-site role is based out of the Windsor Locks, CT site. The selected candidate must be within a reasonable commutable distance of Windsor Locks, CT, or be willing to relocate
What You Will Do:
Serve as a subject matter expert in protective coatings for High temperature (HT) composites with expert understanding of coating chemistry and oxidation & degradation mechanisms
Conduct research to develop high temperature oxidation protection coatings, corrosion coatings and related processes for aerospace products
Conduct ceramic and/or polymeric coating optimization to maximize coating performance using various characterization techniques such as SEM, TGA/DSC, XRD etc.
Conduct or supervise tests for materials or finished products according to engineering design intent. Conduct root cause analysis with stakeholders and customers to assist qualification or quality control of products
Apply knowledge & experience in HT composite coating processes, including but not limited to pack cementation, chemical vapor infiltration, or chemical vapor deposition
Manage projects using a structured approach and coordinate with a multidiscipline team comprising chemists, lab technicians, material engineers, and manufacturing engineers across R&D organizations and manufacturing sites
Lead proposal campaigns to seek government funding opportunities in high temperature composites field
Develop and mature surface engineering technologies to advance technology & manufacturing readiness levels and drive technology transition towards production
Communicate results effectively in relevant business context to our key stakeholders and drive knowledge retention by documenting technical reports
Provides technical leadership and assists in training young talented engineers, when required, to help them diagnose and solve problems and enhance their capabilities
Must be willing and able to travel 15% of the time
Qualifications You Must Have:
Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience
U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required
3+ years experience with chemistry knowledge on coating reaction mechanisms or thermo-chemical analysis or ceramic materials or high temp composites or synthesis
Qualifications We Prefer:
PhD
Prior experience in carbon based high temperature composites and processing
Experience of process development & material characterization related to slurry coating or vapor deposition for high temperature applications
Experience with coating formulation development
Experience on coating and/or chemical process predictive modeling
Working knowledge & experience on material characterization, including chemical, thermal, surface, & micro-structural analysis such as TGA/DSC, XRD, SEM/EDS, XPS, etc.

Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees, as they are essential to the development of our products.
The salary range for this role is 96,000 USD - 200,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
