Tool & Die Making operations focuses on operating computer and/or mechanically controlled machine tools to produce and repair precision metal tools and dies for use in manufacturing including:

  • Analyzing blueprints, computer-aided design (CAD/CAM/CAE) models, and engineering specifications to define the dimensions and features of the cutting/shaping tools, forms, molds, gauges, and jigs/fixtures
  • Determining the optimal tool path for fabricating the tool/form/mold by selecting appropriate machine tools (e.g., lathes, drill presses, milling machines, grinders, boring machines, etc.) and specifying the sequence of tool operations.
  • Manually setting up/adjusting machine tools and/or loading instructions into computer numeric control (CNC) systems.
  • Recommending revisions in design and/or substitutions in material based on machinability or fabrication problems encountered

Tool & Die making operations require advanced knowledge of operational procedures and tools obtained through extensive work experience and may require vocational or technical education.  Responsibilities may include working under limited supervision for non-routine situations and may be responsible for leading daily operations. Training, delegating and reviewing the work of tool & die technicians.

The role of a Senior Tool Designer will include (but is not limited to):

  • Maintaining supply of Tool & Die cutting tools and materials
  • Managing Tool & Die outsourcing, as necessary
  • Evaluate current and future outsourcing needs based on internal capacity and skillset
  • Develop and support the maintenance of Tool & Die equipment
  • Create and manage drawings and programs
  • Order and repair/replace tooling for operations equipment
  • Develop a tool list for each type of tooling by machine
  • Partner with operations to develop accurate and maintained tooling inventory
  • Develop documents with descriptions and ordering information for each type of tooling
  • Provide setup and tooling training for operations personnel
  • Train and guide new tool and die technicians

REQUIRED

  • A two-year associates degree in Machine Tool from an accredited state institution or/plus completion of a four-year machinist training program
  • 10+ years of practical experience in machine shop operation

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred qualifications are formal training in areas such as; Machine Tool Technology, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precision Instruments, Drawings and Blue Prints, Tool Design, Tool Detail, Hand Tool and Machine Safety, and Welding or demonstrate the equivalent in knowledge and skills.
  • Demonstrated performance in the areas of leadership, change management, and continuous improvement.
  • Able to work effectively with limited supervision
