The Principal Cloud Architect is a key role in the engineering group and will help to drive the delivery of high-quality, complex projects. The role combines exceptional leadership skills with deep technical expertise to shape the way we build and deliver software. The Principal Cloud Architect fosters a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement, enabling teams adopt cloud-native engineering practices. As a key leader and a customer-facing technical contributor, the Architect will work with multiple cross-functional engineering and DevOps teams, ensure alignment with business goals, and deliver scalable solutions using cutting-edge technologies. Expertise in cloud platform engineering, DevOps, and modern architecture patterns are necessary to guide the development of robust and future-proof systems.
 

Job Summary
We look for people who can get things done with a simple approach and stay adaptable and open-minded in the process. You’ll work collaboratively with software engineering to support them in becoming autonomous teams, automating and streamlining our operation processes. We want to take ownership of our platforms tooling, build, deployment, monitoring, and operations. You will work closely with Light & Wonder’s product, commercial, support, delivery, and development teams to ensure smooth customer experiences when implementing our software.
 

Key Tasks

  • Architect and Design Cloud Solutions: Design and implement end-to-end cloud solutions on AWS (though could be multi-cloud) that align with business and technical requirements, ensuring scalability, security, and cost-efficiency.

  • Cloud Strategy and Governance: Lead the development of cloud strategies, architecture frameworks, and best practices, ensuring alignment with industry standards and company policies.

  • Hybrid and Multi-Cloud Environments: Design solutions that integrate with on-premises data centres and multi-cloud environments, ensuring seamless interaction between systems.

  • Cloud Migration: Lead and execute cloud migration projects, including the assessment, planning, and execution of migrating applications and data to AWS.

  • Solution Development: Collaborate with development teams and solutions architect peers to define the technical architecture for new applications, ensuring that cloud services, microservices, and APIs are optimised for performance and maintainability.

  • Security and Compliance: Ensure that solutions comply with security standards (e.g., IAM, encryption, firewalls) and industry regulations (e.g., SOC2, ISO / IEC27001 etc.), implementing security controls across cloud platforms.

  • Cost Optimisation: Analyse and optimise cloud costs, ensuring resources are efficiently allocated and maintained while meeting performance requirements.

  • Collaboration: Act as a technical liaison between business stakeholders, developers, infrastructure teams, and third-party vendors to translate business needs into technical solutions.

  • Knowledge Sharing: Provide technical guidance, developer and DevOps training and support to others, in addition to your implementation responsibilities

Reports to: Director of DevOps Engineering
Responsible for: Design and delivery of next generation distribution platforms.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • 5+ years’ experience as a solutions or cloud architect

  • Certified architect in one or more of AWS, GCP, Azure

  • Demonstrable experience of cloud-native adoption and large-scale cloud migrations

  • Experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of cloud-native application architectures, microservices, and serverless frameworks

  • Proficient in AWS services, e.g., AWS Lambda, AWS ECS, IAM, MSK, containerization and container orchestration

  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code tools, e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK

  • Deep knowledge of networking, security, databases, storage, and caching solutions in cloud environments

  • Experience with automation, monitoring, observability, and deployment pipelines using tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI, BitBucket, Ansible, and Docker

  • Experience in building high-volume data processing environments

  • Experience in designing and implementing configuration management (e.g. Ansible)

  • Familiarity with DevSecOps best practices and patterns, such as threat modelling, vulnerability management, container security, security scans, and continuous monitoring
