AbbVie Director, US Payer Strategy lead is responsible for securing patient access to the portfolio of indications for all payer and distribution channels including Commercial health plans, Medicare, Medicaid, VA/DoD, Employer, Health System, and Specialty Pharmacy. The purpose of Payer Strategy is to provide overarching direction and leadership inclusive of product positioning, pricing strategy, financial plan, resource investment, internal and external Senior Executive alignment, and product positioning management.
The Director, US Payer Strategy is required to thoroughly comprehend the current and future state of the US market access environment through mastery of the evolving US healthcare landscape and the market access channels. This includes analyzing market trends and government regulations, identifying payer channel impact and insights, and proactively defining and recommending strategies that yield profitable, broad market access. In addition, Payer Strategy has responsibility for effectively collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to drive market leading access strategies ensuring the success of product to provide patients access to life-changing medicine. Stakeholders include Senior Executive Leadership, Integrated Brand Teams, Market Access Account Teams, Brand Field Sales, MABI, Finance, HEOR, Medical, agency partners, and within the Market Access matrix.
Most importantly, the Director, US Payer Strategy is responsible for positive leadership and productive influence across the enterprise to ensure the effective transfer of market access expertise. Leverages relationships, data, analytics, and strategic mind-set in all aspects of optimizing the strategies of the business. Payer Marketers are required to be a key contributor in business planning and performance discussions exhibiting a high level of financial acumen.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Vision and Strategy:
- Provide overarching leadership and direction for Payer strategy, inclusive of Pricing, Access Value Proposition, financial Plan/LBE/LRP and resource investment for toxins.
- Encompass a “One AbbVie” mindset and perspective in all strategies.
- Leadership:
- Set tone and priorities for scale and scope of accountability.
- Influence and persuade across multiple external and internal constituents (stakeholders and partners).
- Lead and develop direct, indirect, and cross-business teams.
- Infuse AbbVie Ways of Working and Talent Philosophy in day-to-day leadership and management of the business.
- Coach effectively and efficiently to create high-performing teams and elevate team’s marketing skills and knowledge.
- Action and Accountability:
- Lead Market Access portion of the yearly financial planning process, LBE’s and LRP’s, incorporating latest contract negotiations / strategies.
- Ensure impacts to other channels such as government pricing are incorporated, as needed.
- Act as SME from a Market Access perspective for 340B, accumulator and maximizer programs, IRA implementation and provide input for cross functional recommendations on strategies and tactics to address these programs.
- Strategic Impact:
- Utilize research and insights to scenario plan, segment stakeholders, innovate, optimize investment, and formulate the channel access and pricing strategies across a diverse set of stakeholders, landscapes and at different points in product life cycles.
- Formulate and adjust channel business plans and actions to achieve business objectives and goals, including financial, constituents and market results based on objective approach through analysis and segmentation of opportunities to achieve strategic access objectives for formulary penetration.
- Lead the understanding of USMA Channel fundamentals to extraordinary depth to catalyze systemic thinking and innovative access solutions across the portfolio.
- Establish close external and internal bridges to incorporate current and future product positioning and pricing into a comprehensive long-term view of access across channels.
- Participate with internal and external stakeholders to inform/influence product access.
- Collaboration:
- Effectively lead the transference of Channel knowledge throughout the organization (e.g. Brand Teams, Payer Marketing) to enable portfolio to be positioned for optimum access on a per channel basis
- Act as the therapeutic SME to consult with Business Development to inform licensing and acquisition work in light of Channel dynamics and potential opportunity.
- Create customer connections in collaboration with Account Management Teams to influence their POV and to create synergy with AbbVie position on future view and approaches to the market.
Work effectively with multiple cross-functional and Market Access stakeholders including HEOR, Medical, Regulatory, Brand Leadership, Patient Services, Finance, Trade, Account Management teams, Employer, Population Health, Pipeline Development, and Strategy to assimilate leading insights to ensure brands successfully incorporate planning, positioning and strategy.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree required. Advanced Degree/Masters in related healthcare field desirable.
- Minimum of 10 years of Pharmaceutical Market Access, Healthcare or Policy experience
- Cross-functional and/or similar experiences including field sales, finance, regulatory, research & development, HEOR, Business Development and other relevant business functions
- Demonstrate high proficiency of the whole and the component parts of the Marketing skills framework: Insights, Segmentation, Positioning, Value Proposition, Business Model Innovation, Creative Development, and Investment Optimization.
- Optimistic, inquisitive, and able to drive results independently
- Strong communication skills, demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally, and ability to build strong stakeholder relationships across company functions
- Knowledge of the US access, reimbursement, and pricing landscape for pharmaceutical products (both Pharmacy and Medical reimbursement). Includes awareness of commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, other government, and specialty segments.
- Experience with pharmaceutical marketing principles and practices, including a demonstrated ability to develop strategic plans, conduct and interpret market research, and understand the regulatory environment.
