Job Description

The Independent Medical Education team is committed to strategically addressing the most critical healthcare knowledge gaps across disease areas by supporting best in industry independent medical education.  The Director, Independent Medical Education, as the head of this team, leads AbbVie’s comprehensive grants program to support independent medical education across AbbVie’s key disease areas. 

Responsibilities:

Lead and Inspire a High-Performing Team: Manage and mentor a team of four IME professionals, driving performance and excellence while ensuring the team’s alignment with the company’s strategic goals and vision for independent medical education.

Strategic Leadership and Oversight: Oversee a $25MM budget, ensuring the efficient allocation of resources to support impactful educational programs that directly enhance clinical practice and patient outcomes. Drive the strategic direction for disease-specific educational programs that bridge critical knowledge gaps and empower healthcare professionals.

Transformation and Innovation: Oversee the execution of the IME team’s transformation, including the evolution to a new technology platform for IME grant management and reporting, the execution of a robust medical education outcomes approach, effective relationship management of our IME Preferred Provider Network, implementation of our comprehensive call for grants approach, developing focused, high impact IME strategies per disease area, and ensuring strong external stakeholder engagement and thought leadership.

Collaborate with Key Stakeholders: Serve as a strategic partner within Medical Affairs + Health Impact (MHI), collaborating to identify disease-specific education gaps to enable targeted, high impact educational strategies that resonate with healthcare providers and drive meaningful behavior change.

Data-Driven Impact: Oversee the execution of a newly established medical education outcomes framework which enables the collection of feedback, evaluating program effectiveness, and reporting on educational outcomes (knowledge retention, behavior change, clinical impact) to demonstrate the value of IME programs to internal and external stakeholders and inform strategic decision-making on future IME needs.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams (MHI, Clinical Research, Regulatory, Legal, Compliance) to ensure all educational initiatives align with company objectives, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

Industry Leadership and Trendspotting: Stay ahead of trends in medical education, emerging methodologies, and stakeholder expectations by engaging with medical societies, educational organizations, and thought leaders to drive innovation in IME.

Team Development and Talent Building: Cultivate a culture of continuous learning and development within the IME team to ensure the team’s capabilities are aligned with both the company’s evolving needs and the broader healthcare landscape.


Qualifications

  • Minimum 10+ years in positions of relevant experience in medical affairs, medical education, patient education in the pharmaceutical and/or health care industry.
  • Exceptional strategic leadership, critical thinking, and operational management skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of the healthcare landscape, including current disease-specific education gaps, healthcare provider needs, and trends in medical education.
  • A self-starter and proactive in seeking to find operational and programmatic efficiencies and constantly raises the bar to better service the healthcare community.
  • Excellent business acumen and analytical skills and the ability to anticipate patient, company, leadership, and team needs.
  • Excellent communications skills and the ability to translate impact and opportunities to our business leaders, communicators, and other stakeholders to enable transparency and demonstrate value.
  • Proven track record of managing large budgets, effective forecasting, horizon scanning, and ability to manage and analyze data to make evidence-based decisions for strategic and operational enhancements.
  • Operates with the highest degree of ethics and integrity to ensure programs are administered in strict accordance with company and governmental policies, regulations, and guidance.
  • Must be an individual who works well in a team environment and enjoys working in a collegial, yet highly demanding culture. Must be able to work collaboratively with senior business leaders and other internal stakeholders across the enterprise.
