Electronic Systems Controls Engineer
Job details
DESCRIPTION
Job Summary
We are looking for a talented Electronic Systems Controls Engineer to join our team specializing in Electronic Hardware for our location in Columbus, IN . In this role, you will support the development, tuning, testing, and validation of electronic controls and diagnostics that ensure the quality, reliability, and performance of our products. You will work directly with electronic control hardware, the embedded software that powers it, and the diagnostic strategies our team owns, contributing to solutions that impact real‑world applications.
This position requires strong technical communication skills and the ability to translate complex engineering detail into clear, concise information for leadership and cross-functional stakeholders. Your ability to navigate both hands‑on technical work and higher‑level abstraction will be essential to influencing decisions and driving alignment. Experience with electronic hardware in vehicle environments and a background in hands‑on electronics testing will be highly beneficial, enabling you to quickly contribute to troubleshooting, validation activities, and system understanding. In this role, you will collaborate closely with engineering partners and apply both analytical and practical problem‑solving skills to ensure robust, reliable electronic controls across our product portfolio.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Supporting Electronic Controls Development: Assist with developing electronic controls and diagnostic strategies for systems such as internal combustion engines, power systems, and powertrains by applying first‑principles knowledge and control theory.
- Driving Issue Investigation and Resolution: Own the investigation, troubleshooting, and documentation of controls-related issues, collaborating with more experienced engineers to deliver accurate and timely solutions.
- Enhancing Controls Processes and Tools: Contribute to improving development processes and tools across system specification, modeling and simulation, calibration, DVP&R execution, and product life-cycle maintenance.
- Translating Customer Needs Into Requirements: Work with customer feedback and system needs to translate requirements into functional control and diagnostic algorithms, ensuring designs align with performance and reliability expectations.
- Designing and Validating Algorithms: Support the creation, tuning, and validation of algorithms by developing test plans and executing performance evaluations that ensure compliance with functional requirements.
- Solving Moderately Complex Technical Problems: Assist in resolving issues involving algorithm interactions, subsystem behaviors, and system-level controls dynamics while growing technical depth and confidence in ambiguity.
- Collaborating Across Functions: Partner effectively with cross-functional teams—including systems, software, calibration, and testing—to coordinate work and support shared project goals without direct people management.
- Executing Work Processes With Growing Independence: Deliver consistent, high-quality work using established processes while contributing ideas that improve tools, workflows, and team effectiveness as technical proficiency develops.
RESPONSIBILITIES
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
- Electronic Controls & Mechatronics Expertise: Demonstrates a strong understanding of how electronic hardware, sensors, actuators, and control algorithms interact within mechanical, hydraulic, chemical, and electrical systems; applies this knowledge to specify architectures, define interconnections, and ensure robust system behavior in real-world operating conditions.
- Open/Closed Loop Controls Application: Applies control theory to configure, tune, and validate open- and closed-loop control features; evaluates system interactions between hardware and software to deliver stable, predictable, and high‑performing control system responses.
- Statistical & Analytical Problem-Solving: Uses descriptive statistics, probability, regression, DOE, and statistical inference methods to analyze complex technical data; supports decision‑making with rigorous quantitative reasoning and data-backed insights to drive product improvements.
- System Integration & Optimization: Integrates subsystems into complete machine-level solutions using standard tools and best practices; evaluates performance, reliability, cost, and quality impacts while resolving technical issues through structured troubleshooting and proven problem‑solving methods.
- Verification, Validation & Failure Mode Avoidance: Develops and interprets validation plans, analyzes test and simulation results, and identifies failure modes early to reduce product risk; recommends design or control strategy improvements that enhance long-term reliability and customer satisfaction.
Experience:
- Entry level/Early career professional. Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area.
- Knowledge of MS Office tools is also preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS
- This role works directly with controls electronic hardware, the software running on it, and tunes, tests, and validates the diagnostics our team owns.
- Communication on the technical front and the ability to abstract that large volume of detail up for management and stakeholders is key.
- Any experience with electronic hardware in vehicles and/or hands on electronics testing will be very helpful.
