The Senior Director, Finance will act as the business partner to the Head of Engineering, working directly with them and their leadership team to meet expense and capital targets and support the delivery of business objectives. There are 5,000 FTEs and contractors across the Product Engineering organization, which are divided into 10 pillars with a total annual cash OI of $750M.
The role reports to the VP, Decision Support & Insights Group (DSIG), and is a member of both the Product Engineering Leadership team and the Operations & Technology Finance Leadership team.
Additional key relationships/stakeholders for the role include the Chief Product Officer (CPO), the VP Finance for the CPO, the relevant HR business partners, Corporate Finance, Product Engineering pillar leads, Product Engineering Chief of Staff, and the Enterprise Prioritization Committee (EPC).
About the Role
In this opportunity as Senior Director, Finance, you will:
- Be responsible for all decision support and commercial finance activities for the Product Engineering team including contribution to the production of and ownership of business cases, resource utilization and capitalization analysis, capital planning, 3rd party spend planning (including outsourced contractor resources and cloud expenditure), resource effectiveness and productivity analysis, efficiency planning, program support, migrations & obsolescence, and other ad-hoc projects as required.
- Own cloud/LLM financial strategy and governance, overseeing spend, budgets, forecasting, ROI models, and cross-functional planning to ensure cloud investments and savings are aligned to strategic priorities, financial targets, and operational efficiency goals. Demonstrate deep understanding of cloud optimization and modernization levers, and work closely with Product Engineering teams to operationalize initiatives that improve cost efficiency, performance, scalability, and technology effectiveness.
- Provide analysis and leadership to ensure that we use our resources and capital to our best advantage to drive revenue and profit. Work on the development, implementation, and reporting of appropriate KPIs such as capitalization rates & efficiency actions, product profitability analysis, and cloud expenditure (with the wider finance team and business stakeholders as required).
- Work with the VP Finance, Operations & Technology and the Head of Engineering and the Product Engineering Leadership team to improve the partnership between the Product Engineering organization and the key groups with which it interacts including the segments & regions, Product & Editorial, and Operations & Technology. Where required, be responsible for developing, in partnership with the Head of Engineering and other key stakeholders, mitigation pathways to meet the business objectives and financial targets of Product Engineering and Operations & Technology.
- Be responsible for all cost, capital & headcount / resource reporting, forecasting, planning & performance commentary analysis for the Product Engineering teams, working closely with the relevant members of the Product Engineering leadership team and other key stakeholders. This includes the annual budget & plan process, monthly reporting presentations, short- and long-term forecasting & planning, and the identification of Opportunities & Risks against the forecasts/plans.
- Be responsible for forecasting Opex and capital requirements in business cases, including the identification and analysis of product engineering activities & projects and their capitalization treatment. Help the organization make capital and resource allocation decisions through financial analysis (e.g. classic financial analyses such as ROI and DCF/NPV).
- Work in conjunction with the rest of the finance team, including Accounting and other teams within DSIG, to ensure accurate and appropriate accounting treatment of all financial activities related to the business.
- Analyze and interpret financial information pertaining to business performance and make recommendations concerning business policy, resource allocation, and business operations to improve financial performance. Alert key executives to trends in the financial performance of various business lines that may require management action.
- Help to steer the overall strategy and culture of finance, Product Engineering, and Operations & Technology as a member of the relevant leadership teams across finance, Product Engineering, and Thomson Reuters.
- Develop and maintain your finance team, establishing standards for performance and giving appropriate direction as part of DSIG and the broader finance organization. Develop your team to ensure growth in the capabilities of the finance function and to support succession plans across the finance department.
- Lead and contribute to agreed finance transformation initiatives and projects across Operations & Technology and the broader finance teams, including continued adoption of automation tools and machine learning / predictive forecasting models, new financial systems and tools such as OneStream and PowerBI, and ongoing review and improvement of key processes including simplification and standardization where appropriate.
About You
You're a fit for the role of Senior Director, Finance if your background includes:
- Recognized accountancy qualification or equivalent with extensive experience in Finance roles. Relevant experience including experience with capital planning and associated systems would be an advantage.
