The Institutional Securities Group (ISG) has established an ISG Data Group (IDG) to provide single point of accountability for the full spectrum of data related initiatives. This ranges from the defensive risk reduction aspects of data security (both internal and external), through operational effectiveness from improving data quality, to helping enhancing revenue through further leveraging our data assets for providing services to our clients.

The position available is an associate level position within IDG.  Part of the team is responsible for building out the data governance platform across ISG, which includes data governance and strategy, client data protections, data quality controls for desks and data platforms to foster internal and external growth.  The individual will be required to work with senior members of across the ISG businesses and associated Firm functions, such as Technology Operational Risk, Data Center of Excellence, Technology, etc.  The individual will be responsible for driving aspects of the data strategy for ISG, while ensuring compliance with applicable rules and regulations governing the Firm, as well as adherence to internal standards, controls and policies. This role plays a key part in strengthening ISG’s data quality, ensuring that critical data used for client services, risk management and regulatory purposes is accurate, controlled and fit for use.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Support delivery of the data governance / data strategy framework for ISG Global, which includes overall governance, client strategy, internal and external data solutions and platforms

  • Collaborating with ISG business desk heads, Technology and Operational Risk on defining the Sensitive Data Security Program, which includes the implementation of cataloging and other key controls

  • Liaising with Senior Management and desk heads to evaluate external and internal requests for ISG datasets

  • Partnering with Sales and Trading, Research, Technology and other organizations across the Firm on building out a centralized client platform and for ISG’s content, services and solutions

  • Defining detailed requirements and providing overall project management of workflow and platform capabilities front to back, from a client interface to internal Morgan Stanley workflows, product inventories, entitlements systems, APIs, legal requirements etc.

  • Creating internal efficiencies for how data is used within ISG, which includes building new processes, functionality and systems

  • Coordinating across ISG senior management, desk heads, SMEs and control functions to respond to client requests for information around visibility to their data

  • Creating a framework for managing client requests by making processes more efficient and building technology with support organizations to maintain it

  • Engaging global ISG Business Unit Risk Management (BURM) to focus on and deliver increased automation and standardization across applicable processes

  • Improving and monitoring existing data related control frameworks and / or creating new control frameworks if none exists

  • Identifying opportunities for process efficiencies and implementing corresponding solutions within the team as well as teams external to IDG

  • Establishing relationships and work closely with IDG supervisors, ISG BURM, Technology, Operations, Finance, and Compliance

Experience / Skills Required:

  • 3 - 5 years of experience in the financial services industry

  • Experience with data quality concepts, frameworks and metrics (e.g., accuracy, completeness, timeliness, consistency)

  • Ability to analyze complex data flows and identify data quality risks and control gaps.

  • Strong issue management skills, including root cause analysis and remediation tracking, as well as familiarity with data governance concepts such as data ownership, stewardship, metadata, lineage and critical data elements.

  • Strong project management skills and proven ability to move projects through to completion, ideally within capital markets

  • Strong motivation and a self-starter with a positive outlook and desire to solve problems with an ability to work independently with minimal guidance

  • Strong analytical skills with an ability to understand complex workflows and leverage Excel, PPT, Project, Visio, etc.

  • Ability to identify and escalate issues effectively and appropriately

  • Exceptional organizational skills and a high degree of attention to detail

  • Ability to discuss in-depth technology initiatives and ability to work closely with technology teams

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills by clearly articulating objectives, requirements, risks and issues and interacting with Senior Management

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a timely and effective manner and thrive in a fast-paced environment

  • Proven ability to take ideas forward and to challenge others with integrity and maturity

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $100,000 and $150,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
