RMTC Product Support Team Leader
Job details
DESCRIPTION
Job Summary
We are looking for a talented RMTC Product Support Team Leader for our location in Rocky Mount, NC. In this role, you will provide technical leadership and hands‑on problem‑solving support for complex engine systems within a fast‑paced manufacturing environment. You will apply a broad range of engineering competencies—spanning mechanical design, systems understanding, and technical troubleshooting—to resolve issues across engine components and ensure production continuity. The position requires strong proficiency in CAD and 3D modeling, along with familiarity in navigating the complex bill‑of‑materials structure for internal combustion engines and the systems Cummins uses to manage this data, including Windchill and IMS.
Success in this role depends on your ability to thrive under pressure and effectively manage urgent, high‑impact issues that threaten engine build schedules. You will be responsible for organizing cross‑functional teams, setting priorities, and directing resources to restore production quickly and safely. Strong communication skills are essential, as this role requires the ability to provide clear, detailed technical guidance to technicians while also summarizing progress and decision‑making for leadership through concise executive updates. You will be expected to apply structured problem‑solving methodologies, including the full 7‑Step Problem Solving process and tools such as FTA and RCA, to drive root‑cause identification and implement durable corrective actions.
As a team leader, you will oversee day‑to‑day activities of team members, review and approve engineering change documentation, and guide cross‑functional partners toward practical and productive solutions. While the role is primarily focused on engine hardware concerns, experience with electrical systems, electronic components, EHI, software, or controls integration is highly beneficial. An in‑person interview at the Rocky Mount Engine Plant is preferred to ensure alignment with the fast‑paced, collaborative environment this role demands.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Obtaining input from technical managers, project leaders, engineers, and supplier partners to deliver clear recommendations that guide high‑quality product decisions.
- Quality‑Focused Decision Making: Applying academic knowledge and practical experience to independently make day‑to‑day project decisions—such as test planning, analysis details, and cross‑discipline coordination—while maintaining strong quality standards.
- Process & Tool Application: Utilizing and continuously improving processes such as Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, FIRG , and tools such as 7‑step problem solving and design review checklists to support disciplined, high‑quality engineering decisions.
- Independent Project Leadership: Leading smaller‑scale projects with business impact or owning complex components and systems with higher ambiguity, ensuring accountability and clear direction within the project team.
- Execution of Work Systems: Delivering consistent, independent execution of established and emerging engineering work processes while further developing depth in product and technology knowledge.
- Process Improvement Leadership: Driving improvements in work processes and systems across your functional discipline within the business unit to enhance consistency, efficiency, and engineering rigor.
- Team Coordination & Knowledge Transfer: Coordinating work among technicians and student employees while actively sharing expertise and supporting the development of less‑experienced engineers through direct or indirect leadership.
- Technical Guidance & Subject‑Matter Expertise: Providing guidance to influence technical direction and operating as a recognized specialist within your product or discipline area, growing proficiency in the competencies critical to success.
RESPONSIBILITIES
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
- Product Development Execution, Monitoring and Control: Planning, coordinating, and delivering product development activities aligned to requirements and technical profiles while monitoring progress across functional teams; ensuring product capability meets expectations, addressing risks early, and understanding the full lifecycle and stakeholder needs.
- Product Failure Mode Avoidance: Identifying potential failure modes by analyzing interfaces, functions, requirements, and influencing factors; applying structured methods to prevent issues and enhance the reliability and robustness of Cummins products.
- Product Function Modeling, Simulation and Analysis: Using computational tools and analytical methods to evaluate system, subsystem, and component performance; interpreting results to inform design decisions and improve overall product capability.
- Product Interface Management and Integration: Defining, analyzing, and controlling interactions across system boundaries; establishing clear requirements and limits to ensure seamless integration, supported by structured plans for diagnosing and resolving interface‑related issues.
- Product Problem Solving: Applying disciplined, data‑driven problem‑solving methods that protect the customer; identifying assignable and systemic root causes, implementing effective solutions, and ensuring long‑term prevention of reoccurrence.
Education, Licenses, Certifications:
- College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
- Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
- This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
Experience:
- Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.
