I have led an interesting life, one that will inspire anyone to believe that with grit and determination they can overcome hardship. I will discuss the unique challenges I faced as a woman and single mother when I ran for Mayor of Topeka in 2017, as well as the current obstacles I face in her run for U.S. Congress as a Latina female in Kansas. This chat includes everything from my experience and advice on how to handle being the first and only Latina in a boardroom of executives to how to address inequalities and give a voice to others in your community.
Meet The Speaker
I am the Mayor of Topeka, Kansas and the Democratic Candidate for U.S. Congress in the 2nd District of Kansas. Born of humble beginnings, I overcame extraordinary hardships including homelessness, domestic violence, and cancer on my journey into public service, and elected office. I am the first Latina and first single mother to serve as the mayor of the capital of Kansas, and was inspired to lead a life of service after learning that I could use my story to help others overcome their challenges.
